Reports vary from 10-12 for most with one I saw last week saying 7-10 hours.
At 10-12 (reported as a play through, not getting 100%) that makes it longer than Zelda: WW, Metroid Prime, Metal Gear Solid:TTS and Viewtiful Joe, all games you have heartily recommended as "must buys". Suggesting someone rent this instead of purchase... I am puzzled dschroll.
Ok so work can wait.
Maybe the Onimusha intro posted here spoiled me but the CG intro looks bad. Not even just not great, but bad.
Immediately after is a scene that sets us up for the actual gameplay using the in game engine. The Marshall bringing you to Butcher Bay, as well as the other two convicts do not look anywhere near as well modeled as the Riddick char, but they are passable.
Once game play starts you have the choice of what tone you want to strike with the Marshall. (RPG lite elements mentioned I assume) though it really does not matter you only have one option with the Marshall... (and its not to make friends!)
The view is pretty unusual. I never played Breakdown but I am thinking this is similar from descriptions. Seems the standard view is higher than most FPS, and the stealth view (Click in left stick for quieter moving) lowers you to a more familiar viewpoint.
The flailing about when punched in the head, as well as when punching is well done, Much better than just your hands/gun moving in most games. (Again I am pretty sure this was done in Breakdown first).
Oops forgot to mention language.. if you were offended by Manhunt, this may annoy you as well. Riddick seems to have worse language than he did in Pitch Black.
What stuck out the most was Riddick's shadow. So far you can always see it and its very realistic (IMO) for agame. Often its right infront of him however and looks really dark.
As well as Riddick's shadow is done however.. the shadows for objects (many small light sources casting shadows off of boxes and objects) look poor. They appear to be dramatic color changes in the textures and do not seem to have any real illusion of being "real" shadows".
Surfaces also seem to suffer from Need For Speed shininess. Its amazing that you can walk up to any surface and not see ANY blockiness.. but I am wondering who polishes all the surfaces in this prison. Heck the dirt and grime SHINES in this game (So far).
Gameplay is pretty cool so far. the HTH combat is not deep but it works, I was able to throw several punches. In fact I was able to beat someone to death without even getting hit myself (hope the AI gets better for hand to hand combat).
The switch from FP to third person is very fast and smooth, it looks like it makes perfect sense to do this when climbing up and down ladders and makes me wonder why nobody though of this sooner.
I am also somewhat puzzled by the fact that I need to drag a body into the shadows so no guards that pass by are alerted, but its ok to leave the gun the guard was using in the middle of the hallway... (You cannot at this point pickup weapons without being shocked)
