Most people know this is based on a true story, but one thing I did not know until watching the extras on the DVD is that the escape was planned to divert German troops away from the invasion of D-day that occurred the next day, and it worked.


I'll be upgrading to the new DVD once it comes out.

This one is surely the Achilles heel of the 6-or-7-year DVD catalogue with an abysmal representation of one of the greatest POW films in history. EE or no EE, this one needs anamorphic treatment and a whole new face lift which I'm glad to see MGM getting around to doing. Throw in a two-disk spec. edition and you've got a winner here for sure.
