"The Great Raid" at Netflix Fullscreen Only!!

1805 Views 18 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  chefklc
I've had this film in my queue for months now and was really looking forward to sitting down and watching it tonight. To my surprise it was the FULLSCREEN version!!! ARRRGGGHHH!! So I immediately popped it out and threw it back in the red envelope to go back. I know they probably did this to save money as the more expensive (and for some reason shorter) Director's Cut disc is the only widescreen version, but it never crossed my mind that they would only get the fullscreen theatrical version.

So don't waste your time, remove it from your queue and send a note to them letting them know to get the widescreen version.

Damn. I haven't tried it yet, but if this is correct this is about the third one this year. It's getting annoying, but I still think I'll watch it.
It's a chickensh*t way of forcing folks to buy their $30 version.

Disney/Miramax...pure scum.
Thank God I had this in my Blockbuster queue and not my netflix queue. Blockbuster has the widescreen Director's Cut version for those that are interested. Looking forward to seeing this one in the proper widescreen format!
Costco only had the full screen version of this which was odd.

Thanks for the tip, I just signed up for Blockbuster's one month for $1 deal for previous customers so I'll put that at the top of my queue.
I was duped by this as well, and sent the disc back unwatched. Netflix obviously is sensitive to the fullscreen issue, they've deleted several customer reviews in the past day or two which specifically cautioned that this was the fullscreen version and that one's enjoyment of the film might be lessened as a result.

(Overall, this was only my third minor Netflix annoyment in several years, so I'm still a very happy customer. After I was throttled once, I just quit and my wife re-joined instead, which eliminated that problem. Also had a sustained problem getting Johnnie To's "The Mission" from them--kept sending the Jeremy Irons Mission instead. Eventually had to get that disc from Blockbuster as well.)
I thought it was odd that my wife wasn't able to find a wide screen version at Wal-Mart the other day, since they usually carry both WS and FS versions of new releases. I think we'll hold out for a while, maybe pick up the director's cut during the next DDD supersale.

I've had several problems (one very similar to your "The Mission" situation). The latest of which is that they didn't bother to stock Battlestar Galactica Season 2.0.
Why oh why they did not make a regular widescreen version? Do they really want people to spend $30.0 to get widescreen? don't they realize that they lost sales because of this. People who wants the widescreen version have no choice but to get it from another alternative source.

Stupid. Just plain ...........
wouldn't surprise me if some executive thought they were being clever by trying out this approach. of course, all those people who want the widescreen edition will pay the extra money, and those that only want to pay for the single release don't care about such things as widescreen, director's cut etc.

if that is the case, sounds to me like reality town is due for a visit very soon ...

PS: by the way, cd-wow has the region 3 (NTSC) 2 discer at a more resonable price (so why do region 1 customers get the shaft here ?). it could well be another non-progressive hack job (i hate this region), but then again, it might be decent - surpose it depends on the distributor.

That's the one I eventually pre-ordered. There's a link at DVDtalk that has it for $14.99 shipped at CDwow. Plus, it has DTS. Both the R1 releases are crap. I could care less about the novel that comes with the 2 disc set. They should have at least given us the option of not buying it.

My solution was to take this DVD to a vacation cabin where the TV was 4:3. :D

Not a great movie. Had a made for TV feel. Interesting story, but not a great movie.
So has anyone managed to watch this in widescreen? We know Netflix only has the fullscreen version. Blockbuster stores in my area only stock the fullscreen version. I added the widescreen director's cut version to my Blockbuster queue--and when I received it, guess what? It was the fullscreen disc. I'm currently waiting for a replacement to ship.

Pretty poor decision-making all around not to make readily-accessible widescreen versions available.

I put it in my Blockbuster queue. My one month of service is almost over now and I haven't received it.
I got the widescreen director's cut from Blockbuster last week. Watched it last night. Thought it was good. I like all movies regarding WWII.
My version from Netflix was widescreen. Looked great! I got it the same week the DVD was released, so it wasn't some kind of 'replacement
Consider yourself as lucky as Tonedeaf--Netflix clearly states fullscreen on their site and uses the thumbnail artwork for the fullscreen release, which, as it turns out, is at least direct and honest. Blockbuster Online, it seems, chose the duplicitous route: I just got my second disc from them and it, too, was fullscreen--this despite BB Online claiming to only carry the two disc widescreen director's cut edition and showing the artwork for that 2-disc set on their site. Now customer service says that they never claimed they had the widescreen version. So, I suspect just like Netflix they bought up a bunch of the cheap single disc 4:3 versions, and I'll be giving up.
