The HD-A1 is basically PC parts

It's a P4 2.5ghz running Redhat linux. Has some flash memory and a usb2 port.

Yes....yes it is. It also has 1GB of PC2700 Hynix RAM.

Tivo's just a computer also. Your cell phone is a computer. Most stuff is a computer. So whats the problem

Thats good news - now all we have to do is overclock / water-cool the CPU to get the boot / response times down. :D
