Playing tonight (October 1st) at 6:00 PM (East)

They had shown this before, and I had gotten excited to see it in 'TRUE HDTV' like their schedule said, but when it came on the last time it was 1.33:1 and definitely not in 'TRUE HDTV'.

So the question this time is, "Will it be 'TRUE HDTV'?" and if so will they chop it to 1.78:1 like they do many of the 2.35:1 flicks they show (like Episode II). There should be an HD transfer lying around somewhere, they probably took one for the SE DVD release in May 2003. HBO HD has been known to show a film in full frame once and then later show it in it's OAR, they did it with The Fifth Element even though it 2.35:1.

Anyone in the know? Opinions?

I watched it on HBO HD Monday night at Midnight, it was true HDTV but it was formatted to fit 16:9 not OAR. The picture quality was excellent, I wasn't planning on staying up unit 2:00AM to watch the whole thing, but once it came on I couldn't turn it off.

Edit: Sorry, I was talking about Crimson Tide.

Hunt for Red October came on this morning on HBO-HD and it is indeed 2.35 and shown OAR.

The transfer for Red October was done before HBO implemented their stupid policy of cropping all movies to 16:9. Since they already have the transfer in-hand, they'll just air it as is, but for anything newer they crop.

I was afraid that was the case :(

Are we in bazzaro world, where everthing is backwards?

(they should have started cropping, then change to OAR, not the other way around!!!!!!!)

If people would quit complaining about black bars, damn!!

Man, it's so frustrating that they crop that stuff. I would think most of the HD customers would prefer OAR. Have many of you phoned or emailed HBO to voice your opinions?

Probably because it is a 1.85 movie.
