If (and I reiteriate "If") I were to display SD material using a 4:3 aspect ratio on my plasma, would one of the following three color choices be less likely to produce a lot of image-retention: Black, Dark Gray, Light Gray. For the record, I currently fill the screen all the time (except for upconvert 4:3 signals on HD channels)

Thanks.

This may sound glib, but it depends how your brightness / contrast are set.

I assume the set is still new and you're breaking in?

One of the greys will be best, certainly better than black.

I would choose the grey that best matches the overall picture brightness.

If the bars stand out as being much brighter or darker than the picture, choose the other one.

I might assume 50% would be an ideal first guess, but if you watch really dark or bright programming, then maybe not.

Last, I wouldn't worry about it at all if the set is broken in and you vary your viewing.

The set (an Elite 1130HD) is fully broken-in and has been calibrated by an ISF technician. I've always used Pioneer's "Cinema" mode to watch SD programming (it crops to 14:9 and stretches the picture slightly overall, and moreso at the sides - when you adjust the picture a few notches vertically it provides the best "stretch" mode I've ever seen). Because the DirecTV HR20 advance program guide gets cropped off in this Mode, I'm thinking of going back to "Full" stretch, and use the side-pillar insertation available via the DirecTV HR20 receiver. That would prevent my cursor from going off-screen when using the guide. The HR20 has the three color options. If I go this route, its possible that side pillars could be displayed for hours at a time during the day. I'll probably end up going with Black, so that its consistent with upconverted SD programming and similar to the color of the bezel. I've never noticed in IR from watching 2:35:1 movies in their OAR, so I think I'm safe. We watch mostly HD programming at night, so it should be varied enough.

Personally I feel uncomfortable watching anything that does not occupy the entire screen. If it 4:3 I always watch it in JUST mode on my Panasonic (I am sure there are similar modes available on just about every plasma), it is like a compound stretch (more at the sides and less in the middle), in fact it works so well that I kind of prefer watching 4:3 stuff in JUST mode now. If it is 2.35:1 material I use a little bit of a zoom and a little bit of a vertical stretch, you can tell that it is a little stretched and technically I miss a very small amount of material on the sides but using the full screen is much more cinematic feeling to me, plus I do not have to worry at all about uneven phosphor wear.
