Wanted to see if the results would be the same if this poll is also posted in the HD DVD forum.

Which version of "Lord Of The Rings" would you buy?

I went for the TrueHD version, but even if it did not have TrueHD, I'd get HD DVD over any other release.

I don't understand why the TotalHD would have any different sound track on it then the standard HD-DVD. Warner and I would guess New Line would do the same thing and put the better sound track on the HD-DVD side of the disk.

As long as the video is 5 star as well as the sound even without the TrueHD track I will still love it!

I think some may be hoping for a HD DVD tri-layer release of the series with 24/96 True HD, and I'm not sure that "TotalHD" can be done with a tri-layer HD DVD side.

However, we need to get more info on that tri-layer technology, a realistic time table to market, and player compatability issues answered first.

Not my favourite movies, but id buy it regardless of format, given that one doesnt look better than the other and both had TrueHD/Lossless Sound.... so I didnt vote for any because I wouldnt specifically get one over the other unless there was a reason (see 1st part of my post).

I agree as long is its not blu-ray related I would by Theatrical and or EE with or without extras using which ever audio codec at any bitrate.

I agree, as long as it's not BD I will get the VHS mono version....

Personally I will wait and see the specs. on these releases and buy the best one. Neither side deserves blind loyalty.

The real question is:

Single sided disc, Dual disc, or flipper? I wouldn't TOUCH it unless it is single disc. Has to be EE also, with True HD.

HD-DVD Dolby TrueHD version for me. Unless a lossless Blu-ray version had better audio.

Bah, I said TrueHD but I meant Total HD. They've already said New Line is working on it for Total HD release.

The Total HD should be a single sided disc but I would not it being a flipper stop me from owning one of the greatest pieces of cinema ever created.

I can't really enjoy the DVD print art while I'm watching the movie anyway.

Is there another thread that theorizes about 1vs2 discs and/or pricing? I was a little taken aback by the $100 comment but it didn't take me long to realize that after waiting a month or so I'd buy at that without much hesitation. Maybe $100 MSRP $70 online with some care, no hesitation at all. Tough question would be if I knew they were holding back some goodies on their initial release, I'd probably play right into their hands, buy for a premium and then doubledip when the ultrauber edition comes out.

The platinum boxed set LOTR sells for $65 on SD-DVD, I would count on a 30% premium for HD without a doubt. The whole reason for studios to redo these releases is to get consumers to double dip and net them a higher profit margin at the same time, especially from early adopters.

Jackson has previously said that HD was already being worked on for LOTR, he's probably already given it his blessing and I doubt that he can or would hold it up at this point. It still doesn't guarentee a 2007 release though.

I went for standard HD DVD, only because I'm still not very clear on that other stuff (Total this, True That)...

Has anyone with an hd dvd player (not BD) commented on what the SD looks like up scaled? We've all been reading the reviews on how well the various untis upscale, A2, XA1, etc, but I can't recall anyone taking a look at the LOTR series and getting back on it, maybe because its taboo with the looming hd version coming someday? Thanks. =)
