This is one list I found that is strictly a listing which I like. It looks like it is the most recent. ? Wonder how many of these are on DVD?-I would say at least 90%- You need adobe to link it.

That appears to be a copy of the original list from 6 years ago.

And all but 5 of those are currently available on DVD. Missing are: Star Wars (coming soon); The African Queen; King Kong (1933) (probably will be released when the remake is out), The Jazz Singer, and Bringing Up Baby.

I'm no authority on this, but I rarely agree with AFI's listings. And even less sure how they reach their conclusions. I assume they have a voting membership society or something(?). I mean, the Matrix is not even listed, :D but since City Lights is, I'll forgive them.

This is supposed to be a list of good films, not big money making ones. :)

Actually, Matrix wasn't eligible anyway, as it was made after 1996.

From the AFI site on the list and how the films were selected:

"AFI's 100 Years...100 Movies is an 18-month celebration that began last November when AFI invited more than 1,500 leaders from across the American film community - screenwriters, directors, actors, producers, cinematographers, editors, executives, film historians and critics, among them - to choose from a list of 400 nominated films compiled by AFI and select the 100 greatest American movies. The nominated films were all made in the first 100 years of American cinema (1896-1996). Movies produced after 1996 were not included. "

Actually, "Tootsie" is #2 on the AFI 100 greatest comedies list. I think it deserved the spot. In fact, when I heard that AFI was doing a top 100 list for comedies, I personally thought "Tootsie" might be #1 (although I completely agree with "Some Like it Hot" taking that position). I think "Tootsie" is a really great film. And one that holds up well even after 20+ years.

You do know my post was a total joke. I really thought AFI was a society of professionals anyways. I also assumed many did'nt catch The Matrix until video release like me. So it made money and was good :). It really does'nt matter what the experts chose, I won't buy based on their picks alone. Maybe us commoners should be allowed to vote, or perhaps we can create our own voting society.

Wow...didn't realize so many people don't like it. I think it's one of the greatest comedies ever. And definitely time tested. Sharp writing and editing with great acting.

Most films are classic (before my generation) and are too boring to watch or sit thru, in order to understand its place in the list. In fact, looking thru the entire list, they seem to be slow-paced or un-repeatable-viewing kind of movies except for maybe .....

3.The Godfather,

9. Schindler's List

15. Star Wars

25. E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial

32. The Godfather, Part II

43. King Kong

48. Jaws

49. Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs

50. Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid

53. Amadeus

55. The Sound of Music

58. Fantasia

60. Raiders of the Lost Ark

64. Close Encounters of the Third Kind

65. The Silence of the Lambs

71. Forrest Gump

75. Dances with Wolves

83. Platoon

94. Goodfellas

95. Pulp Fiction

If only they explain how movies are voted 'best'.... maybe I can learn to like or appreciate them (?!).

Or perhaps a new review panel should be set up consisting of the next generation.

Pixel - let me take a guess and say that you haven't actuall seen many of the movies you are writting off as slow-pased or un-repeatable. Give some of these a try, you might actually like them. A few of them, The French Connection for example, fit nobody's definition of slow-paced or un-rewatachable.

I'm curious how many of these have you actually watched (all the way through, not catching 15-minutes on TV) and disliked?

I dont agree with either of the top 2. They both are very good movies(well written, good directors, great acting) neither is in my to 10. They arent funny enough. Also am i the only one to find it coincidental that both are about men dressing as women?

if they used the same standards they did when they made the list in the first place, scope, contribution, preservation of the art form (there was a tv special when they released the list) then i doubt LOTR would be on there.

There are only two films directed by Lucas on the list: Star Wars and American Graffiti. I'd hardly call that a lot.

Would LOTR even qualify as an "American" film?
