Sadly, I don't have an avr to act as a intermediary.

I like rickdeckard's buried comment:

The only possible workaround I'm aware of that hasn't been explored definitively is putting a pass-through device inline with the BD30 and Samsung, like an HDMI switch or AVR

For $18.50 you can get a 'manual' repeater switch which does clean up and retransmit hdmi. It might have that little change in line impedance that you need to make the Samsung sync up good. If nothing else it would give you a third input to your display. Personally for $10 more I'd get the remote version so I could control it with my universal remote!

Monoprice switchers get pretty good reviews.

I have a question about the workaround to the LFE problem. If I hook up a BD-30 to my Denon 3808 via both HDMI and analog connections (in order to use the analogs for PCM), will I lose Audyssey and other speaker management functions in the receiver when playing PCM tracks? That would be unfortunate.

I am seriously thinking about getting this Panasonic BR Player, but so many reports of problems not sure what to make of it all.

Here is my current set-up, would value your view as to whether my set-up would be compatible with this Panasonic BR Player, or likely to be a source of problems:

1. AVR- Onkyo 705 (would hook up the Panasonic BR Player to the Onkyo via an HDMI input)

2. Motorolla HD/DVR Cable Box

3. Sony 40 inch LCD Flat Panel (720p native resol)

4. Sony Model xxx77 Upconvert DVD Player... My intent is to have the Panasonic BR Player replace this Sony DVD player

Your feedback would be appreciated.

Larry

You will get many opinions on this, BUT in light of the LFE issue on the BD30, I will not rec this player to anyone using HDMI for audio, and I own the BD30. If Panasonic does end up fixing this, then this player is a no brainer, but that is a BIG IF right now. If you have to have a player today, and dont want a PS3, get the Pioneer 95. If you can wait, you might want to see how the upcoming players pan out and if the BD30 gets this much needed fix.

I am not in any rush. My criteria for going Blu-ray is a hassle free unit. I just took the step to the Onkyo 705 and was bit apprehensive as I moved from a 9 year old Sony processor. Fortunately all worked well. I would not want to add a BR player with lot's of hassle. So I will just wait till things get sorted out.

There is really only one problem with the BD30 - the LFE bug. Everything else about this player is excellent with the possible exception of less than the best dvd upscaling capability (its not a problem but there are better upscalers). The good news is that you can experience the hi-res audio without any LFE bug by following the prescription here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=993305 Your Onkyo 705 will work very well. So, unlike Toe, I heartily recommend this player with the further hope that a FW update will fix the LFE bug for PCM over HDMI. I own three BD players (others are Samsung 1200 and Sony 300) and the BD30 is by no small margin the best on these three.

This will work, but understand that there are still compromises with this route. For 7.1 sources (more and more of these will be coming out) you will be SOL, and also if you want to apply any post processing (Ultra2), you will not be able to. These compromises should not have to be made. If you dont care about post processing why not just grab a BD10A and use the analogs on that unit as it does have 7.1.

The BD30 will not be a hassle free unit considering the LFE issue. You say you are not in any rush so I would wait and see what Panny ultimately does or does not do with this, and you can see how the upcoming players turn out. Having to hook up both analog and HDMI sounds like a hassle to me, especialy considering it is not a perfect solution, and the biggest thing which is we should not have to be dealing with this anyway!

even with the PCM LFE problem. I would still recommend the panasonic 30 player.. the fact that it will bistream with your new onkyo 705 receiver.. its worth the money right there. to have the reciever read the trueHD and DTS MA.. go for it.. you if get the settings right on the upscale on dvds.. it will be just fine.

True but many Blu-Ray discs only include uncompressed PCM and no True-HD or DTS-HD MA.

With PCM: MC analog inputs should be used to correct the LFE problem.

I am doing this with mine. I tested it with a calibrbration disk and SPL meter, all is fine.

This workaround is posted in a previous post.

I recommend the BD30. The unit is reliable, decent load times and produces a great picture. The LFE bug is way overrated. The best out there currently, in my opinion.

I just recently acquired an Onkyo TX-SR805 and am feeding it with the Panasonic BD30 Blu ray player. I just rented The Marine which states that it is DTS-HD lossless 5.1. I confirmed via the BD30 that it is outputting DTS-HS Multi by pressing the Audio button during playback. The Onkyo is set in the receiver to play DTS-HD when it is present, True HD when it's present, etc... I verified.

Everything is set to bitstream, secondary audio - off. HDMI Audio - Off

However, when I play the movie, only DTS shows on the Onkyo display, not DTS-HD or DTS-HD MA. I tried Saw IV tonight also, same deal. Any ideas or help? Thanks.

There is no issue with the 5th Element Dolby True HD. Recheck you have set everything to bitstream in the BD30 and you have selected TrueHD on the disc (sometimes the BD30 looses its settings).

Rechecked everything--10 times. still only get PCM on my 905. Also tried Blade Runner -- same deal. verified that the BD30 is putting out TrueHD by pressing the Audio button on the remote--it says TrueHD Multich. I'm now looking at settings for the 905.

Could this be a cable quality issue? I'm using a Monster 800 HDMI cable...

Thanks!

Had the same problem, turned off HDM\\I Audio to off and multi-channel from panarama to off (or what ever) and it seemed to work, i.e. no PCM light on the display. Now getting more audio modes like THL Ultra 2, but still don't see a TrueHD light.

You are not using HDMI for audio, right ? (I'm assuming since it is a Rotel). In that case you cannot get multi channel uncompressed audio, only using HDMI. I also assume the Digital Audio Output on the BD30 is set to PCM so what you are getting is a 2 channel only. Yes you would get U.A if you used the 6-channel out.

Make sure you read page 21 of the manual. If you set HDMI Audio to off you will never get TrueHD.

To get the higher res audio modes, you need to connect it to the Onkyo using HDMI and have HDMI Audio on the BD30. Then set everything to bitstream. If it still does not work, I would suggest posting a question in the Receiver forum because it would be an issue with Onkyo configuration.
