The Biggest change in 2018 is the addition of Surround Artificial Intelligence (AKA Sound AI)

2018 updates vs 2017 Aventage Models:

  • Surround Artificial Intellegence
  • Wireless Multi-Cast Surround
  • 1-More HDMI Output (Zone 2) for 3 Total
  • 2-XLR Pre-Outs (Front L/R Speakers)
  • New Back-Lit remote, with 8 Scene buttons
  • Bluetooth version 4.2 (receiver only)
  • 5.8Ghz WiFi support added
  • Improved GUI (?)
Removed from 2017 Models:

  • 1-HMDI input from Front Panel (absent on 2018 models)
  • Number of Scenes reduced from 12 to 8 (4 less on 2018 models)
  • Bluetooth V2.1 Receiver and Transmitter (Transmitter eliminated on 2018 models)
  • Up-Mixing of Dolby Digital, DD+ and TrueHD will be limited to Dolby Surround (or a Yamaha DSP mode) on New 2018 models
(2017 models can still use Neural:X Up-Mixer on any sound format, up to 7.1.4)
2017 Aventage Remote (Left) 2018 Aventage Remote (Right)

3rd HDMI Out (New for 2018)

Rear Panel changes

Hidden Front panel changes (HDMI IN *Gone*)

So the HDMI IN count drops from 8 to 7, and they provide on extra HDMI Out instead.

I found the front HDMI access very handy to hook up a Laptop to run a quick REW sweep
or for a quick temporary hookup to an HDMI capable Camcorder/GoPro without pulling the AVR out of the rack.

....more to be added as I get time

:)

The Number 1 question posted for the past 4 model years in every YAMAHA AVR thread
Always seems to be "How do I get the Front Panel display to read ATMOS?"

...I know this because I posted the answer a hundred times over, quoting right from the manual!
I swore if I ever started a Yamaha Official thread, this would be Posted in Bold on the Very first page

In the past, the simple answer was press the "info" button on the remote
(toggles between the audio source with the decoder that is being applied)

On the XX80 Series the info button is no longer on the remote,
So you must open the front hidden panel on the AVR and press the INFO button

For those who can't be bothered to look it up in the manual:

If you're using your Blu-ray player to play an ATMOS encoded movie you should see this:

Owner manual page 117. Press the Info button on the front of the unit.

OR.......

You can also change the Program Up and Down buttons on the Yamaha remote to bring up the OSD with all the pertinent info with one button press (it can also be set to do other things... )

Owner manual page 154... which will give you a one button push to toggle the front LCD display and turn OSD on and off...

Change to Assign 8. Pushing Program Down will bring up the OSD (where you can also then page left and right to other setup info) or Program Up to toggle the front display.

It’s a really cool feature (you can also have it cycle movie and music DSP separately, adjust sub level, etc)

Using a post to what has been "added" and also as important --what has been "subtracted" from the XX70 models would be a great thing.

Mysteriously Missing from the 2018 User Manuals: Web Control Center
I'm not sure why it was not included, but I have heard it still works on the new 2018's, perhaps somewhat more limited though

Here's the instructions from the 2017 RX-A3070/2070 manual to access the app from a laptop via wifi router:

You can save as many backup files/speaker configurations and YPAO settings as your laptop can hold,
just make sure you name them appropriately in a file folder named for quick access.

**Now to go one step further, that worked on the Previous Generation Yamaha's (Yet to be confirmed on the 2018 Models)
If you enter "/Setup" after your Yamaha's IP in your browsers address bar, You get every possible setting in your AVR
**

How to Find your AVR's IP address (after you have it setup on your Network)
Instructions Here: https://www.avsforum.com/forum/90-receivers-amps-processors/2831721-yamaha-rx-a3070-a2070-a1070-aventage-owners-thread-47.html#post55269990

...a few screen shots of my laptop from my Old RX-A3050:

Once I get more information/confirmation I will update the first reserved spot

Web Control on my RX-A2080 only allows me to change certain settings on the receiver. It is extremely limited and doesn't look like the above at all, so apparently Yamaha severely scaled it back for this model year. WHY???

Wow, that's extremely disappointing
(as a long time Yamaha user (4 decades), and notorious settings tweeker)
Maybe that's why its been omitted from the new 2018 user manuals

Setting your own PEQ values was a breeze with the web controller interface,
I sure hope Yamaha doesn't do that to the their 2018 Flagship CX-A5200 Pre/Pro too ...

As many know, YPAO is notoriously weak when it comes to Sub EQ, only 4 Bands of Sub EQ and limited to >31.3Hz
and many turn to a better mic like a UMIK-1/Omni Mic and use REW to make manual PEQ corrections down to 16Hz
Some even turn to an external DSP like miniDSP/Antimode for multiple sub configurations. (Guilty on all counts!)

Can you access this menu?

Where does "Advanced Settings" take you?
X2!

I wish I had one to test,

But when I saw the changes coming down the pipe,
I abandoned my old RX-A3050 to pickup a Hugely discounted (-$600) RX-A3070 instead

The only thing really missing on the 3050 for me was Dolby Vision,
The RX-A3070 better last me for the next 5-6 years...well after the dust settles on HDMI 2.1

What is it with this removing useful features trend amongst AVR manufacturers? D&M has done it with Denons as well.

Who knows... this is disappointing. I have never owned a Yamaha before but the web feature was definitely something I would want to use if I get one. I am seriously leaning towards a 3080.

Silly question, but you can still access all of the PEQ settings in the GUI, correct?

I've owned Yamaha AV components exclusively since 1979, nearly 4 decades
...and this is the first year I almost switched over to team Marantz

I Really wanted 7.2.6 support in my next processor,
but that appears to be out of reach for me right now, maybe after HDMI 2.1.

I had a great shot at a Marantz SR7012 for almost half price,
but in the end I stuck with Yamaha, sold my 3050 for a discounted 3070 instead

For Dolby Vision support, Amazon Alexa support and Yamaha's Web Control
and Yamaha's Superior AV controller App for iOS/Andoid phones/tablets.

I use my andoid phone and tablet from anywhere in the house or out in the Garage 100' away (via WiFi)
So no need for an IR remote, even if the new one is back-lit :p
