What is people's opinion on dolby making use of separate profiles with Dolby vision and manufacturers adopting the one they wish? This is leading to quite a few picture quality differences among the oled brands, instead of making a proprietary format like DV look the same.

This thread is meant to discuss the Dolby vision implementations on the major LG, Sony and Panasonic brands, their differences , the dolby vision profiles used on these oled TV's (profile 4 vs profile 5) and other general DV content performance on oleds.
LG and Panasonic have adopted the older profile 4 that employs hardware processing.
Sony oleds use the newer profile 5 (player led profile) that leads to differences in how Dolby vision looks (Dolby visions original goal was to have all Dolby vision TV's look the same with their proprietary format, but that's clearly not the case.

I thought the intention for Dolby Vision was to have a set of standards that were the same across displays. But of course every manufacturer’s display capabilities, picture quality and accuracy are not equal. Given that how are the standards consistently applied...?

Unfortunately, they are not applied consistently. The software Dolby provides to manufacturers allows them to tweak parameters in the tone mapping outside of what is reference. Dolby doesn't push back on them too hard because they don't want to lose the licensing fees.
I have read that new newer DV Vivid mode on Philips and Panasonic was a deal for those companys to join Dolby. And in that mode philips/panasonic was allowed to make some of their own adjustments while bright and dark is locked. This was talked about when news of panasonic using DV broke and again now that new Philips have DV. It would be interesting if this was the case.
I have a Sony AF8 myself that have gotten a lot of patches for DV and while it's better than the beginning is still darker than other newer sets and have other problems. I used raised gamma and tuned on ACE as D-nice hinted after he calibrated a few sets. Netflix, both built in app and from appletv still have a lot of DV problems with grainy textures, some flashing. I see it clearly on shows like Mindhunters torture scene and also the new Another Life sci-fi. HDR10 looks much better here. I think it's the low bitrate on streaming together with the low latency profile sonys using. I heard many with LG and panasonic that don't see this issues. Seems AF9/AG9 is better also. Might be the older processor also?
Since Sony is so good at HDR10 and it's tonemapping and from other users I now have turned off all DV on my appleTV4k and Oppo 203 and run HDR10 on all HDR.
I think the hardware solution is better for now based on a lot of reviews and I wonder how long dolby can keep the special profile running/updated just for sony if all other brands go hardware.
But on other hand it seems the Oppo DV MEL profile works better than Panasonics players so seems there are more problems right now to fix.
