It seems that only only reason I might need HDMI 1.4 is for receiving DirecTV 3D.

That seems odd since they are using a 1.3 compatible format at this time (not frame packing).

Since I am able to pipe 3D and high quality multichannel audio through all my existing equipment (via computer with PowerDVD) without 1.4 then I think I will forget about DirecTV 3D unless I can trick the DirecTV receiver into thinking it's connected directly to my 3DTV.

I wonder if the extron EDID minder device could fool the Directv receiver ?

Frank,

See the following about HDMI 1.4 features:

You can use a Gefen HDMI detective to fool the DirectTV receiver.

Frame packing is only used by the 3D Blu_ray disk players. Neither cable or Satellite has the bandwith available yet to provide it. I know Motorola is working on a braodcast and STB solutgion to be able to provide it.
