On to the equipment rack in my media room. My rack is a little different than most that you see as I wanted to also support my data entrance point in my media room so I made a L shaped shelf under the opening for the rack that wrapped around under the media entry panel. I than used the metal shelves that you by from HD or Lowes that have the triangle shaped shelf supports. I than fashioned another shelf from the bottom of the media entry panel around to the rack.

We cut the shelves and used biscuit joints and kregg screws to make the shelfs. I gave enough clearance for ventilation to install my old Pioneer 818 AVR to power my speakers on the back porch and my work shop and my new Denon X4000 AVR into the rack along with my other toys like my power management center and Panasonic Blue Ray etc.

cw5billwade,
Been awhile since I checked in on your build - looking good (and a nice upgrade on the Stang!)
I need to mention that you had a clever way to pass the time with the State of the Nation Address last night, I need to try that next year![]()
So since I last checked in on you; I have been enlisted to assist my brother with his build, and have a question about ideas I intend to "borrow" from your build.
In the photo above I am curious of the dimension of your AV equipment shelving.
Also what thickness of shelf material ( I have also been looking at the pre-laminated shelving, but am concerned that these might bow or sag?
Now that yours have been in use any concerns or suggestions?
Also; it looks like you took the longer shelf support brackets and cut them back and perhaps drilled some holes thru them to better "lock" the shelf to the bracket form the underside..?
Thanks in Advance!
Craig
Hey Craig Glad you checked in. I made the opening 21” so that after the builder trimmed it out with 3/4" MDF it would have a 19 1/2" opening. Just seemed to be the size most racks are so I went with that. Not all my shelving is laminated MDF just the parts that you can see from the Billiard room and the up rights. I used some regular MDF on the media side from the pieces left over from the window plug. The Laminated MDF was just some old shelves I had laying around. Both the shelves and the other MDF I used were 3/4" I used the biscuit joiner and the Krieg screw kit to build the entire thing.Quote:

3/4" MDF which is what they use for shelves in the closets and pantry so no concern with sagging

You can buy smaller brackets come in different sizes. My friend gave me these from something he tore out. So no need to by them I did trim them to suite my needs and drilled a new hole to secure the shelves. The shelves cantilever out the opening and the front 5" of shelf has no support under it. You just want to secure the shelf so if you have a piece of gear which will have more weight on the front 5”. For most gear that is 14" deep there is no problem.
Thanks in Advance!

You were probably slobbering drunk within 10 minutes, then!![]()
We have the same here in Charlotte, or dare I say a bit more on the ground. All is good, though. It will be gone by the weekend.
Miss Hawaii yet??![]()
I would not use 1/2"Quote:

Thank You - Quite helpful!
We are going with a finished opening 20" wide
So it seems that the laminated 3/4" MDF is plenty sturdy for those shorter AV equipment shelves?
I'll have to look around to see where I can find some (stuff I originally saw was 1/2' laminated particle board - and that worries me as not being strong enough)
Craig
Agreed. Depending on the dimensions, that stuff loves to warp under load, over time.Quote:

Got my right SI joints done today so I guess since I can not work up there I will be watching another marathon. What to watch?
yea I did not use any provisional design service or anything I just took what I learned from the very well documented build threads here made some calls to sound proofing company and went from there. I think the soundproofing is not an issue and you only need to look at the acoustical properties. i.e. stuff stage with sand, stuff the riser with insulation. I would do full front and back of room like I did and then figure out where you need them on the side walls.Quote:

Hi there - just popped over from the thread you have been helping me with. Great project you are on here. Must say we have had the rain in Cornwall... but no snow. Mind you today shows some signs of Spring. Many thanks for your help on my project. I will follow the links you gave me.
