The Samsung 4661 LCD is going back...need advice on Panny Plasma

Ok, here's my situation...two weeks ago, after much research, I purchased a 46" Samsung 4661 LCD. I spent the last two weeks tweaking the settings to get the best picture possible. The problem is even though it is 1080p the picture quality doesn't comare to my 42" Panasonic ED, yes ED, plasma. The biggest difference is what I would call the "softness" of the HD content and the black crush on the Samsung.

So, I've decided to return the LCD and go back to plasma. I'm pretty much limited to a 42" plasma based on my entertainment center. I want to stick with Panasonic based on my previous experience, their reputation and pricing.

The best available choice for me right now seems to be the PX77U due to the anti-glare coating (it will be going in a family room with a number of windows). However, I saw that a 42" Panny that displays 1080p will be coming this summer.

What would you do? Wait for the 1080p or go for the px77u? My viewing distance is about 10 feet so I'm not sure if the 1080p will make a big difference but I don't want buyers remorse.

Thank you in advance for any thoughts.

Ummm, I am a plasma fan without question. But I personally think that 4661 is a much better piece than your current ED plasma. Do you know that all the processing needs to be shut off, and the LCD put in Movie mode to get the maximum from the blacks. Blacks are great with that set. As good or better than some current plasma screens actually. You just got to know how to use Samsung's processing model.
I've spent the last two weeks making adjustments to get the most of the 4661. For example, making adjustments to calibration settings that others had posted and using a calibration DVD on my own. Prior to seeing them side-by-side I would have agreed with you. The difference is small, but I paid about $1k more than I would have with a plasma for a picture quality that is o.k. (but understandably good in the LCD world).

FYI...I saw several people posting in a Panny thread about returning the 4661/4665 for the new Panny 1080p plasma models so I'm not alone.
42"? Go for the PX77U.

Agreed, the 42PX77U sounds like a great choice due to it's apparently pretty effective anti-glare coating, and that 1080p would not be of benefit to you at your 10 foot viewing distance. I've already seen a few reports indicating that the new anti-glare coating on the PX77 does a much better job than their traditional anti-reflective coating.

Have you paid any attention to the 8th Generation Pioneer Plasmas that are going to be available in June.

They have a couple of 42inch models that are supposed to be 16,000 to one Static CR, and are supposed to have great blacks?.

I don't think Panny has a 1080p 42" set out yet. You can bet it will be $$$ when it comes out.
Panasonic has a 42" 1080p set that should be out in the next couple of weeks. It should have a street price around $2000.
