This is not a build thread, but our theater has been:

1) built since I joined AVS Forum, based primarily on what I've learned here, and
2) upgraded many times - again, with most of the information, and no small part of the motivation, coming from this Dedicated Theater Design & Construction forum.

It all started in 2005 when we put together a 3.1 system in our block concrete wall with drop ceiling basement. It consisted of an InFocus SP5000 projector, a Yamaha RXV-2600 receiver and JBL S80 speakers.

Then I joined AVS…

Fast forward to today.

The gear:

Images:
  • Projector, Lens, Processor: JVC NX7, Panamorph Paladin DCR, Lumagen Radiance Pro 4242

Updates completed January 2020.
  • Epson 6040ub -> JVC NX-7
  • Panamorph UH440 ->Panamorph DCR
  • No video processor -> Lumagen 4242
  • Carada Criterion BW 128" 235:1 -> Stewart ST130 G4 141" 235:1
Decided to name it, as it was a dream as a (pre-VCR) kid to someday have my own screening room.

Everything is working great. Aside from the DTM and overall image improvement, the automatic aspect correction of the Lumagen is my favorite feature of our "new" theater.

And thanks to @MississippiMan for pointing out that I could fit a bigger screen and @Craig Peer for the amazing sales & service for the screen.

I say, "And with this week's calibration, the theater is finally done!"

...as she rolls her eyes.

While Chad calibrated our Epson when we had it, the uncalibrated NX7/Lumagen/Stewart looked pretty good to me.

But now that it's been calibrated? The improvement in the image is no less than astonishing.

If you have a theater, and haven't gotten a pro calibration, you may not know what you are missing.

Ok so you have a Panamorph DCR and a Lumagen 4242.. Are you using firmware 3.10 on the NX-7 and the Lumagen? if so, are you using Frame-By-Frame HDR of the JVC, or just using the Lumagen or both? Plus, by using the DCR, you don't have to do the AR changes, and the Lumagen does automatic AR changes for you as well..



I am definitely interested in your setup.. I wish I was closer to Indy.

Wow, the Nx7 + lumagen must throw a great image onto the stewart screen. End game video goals

Yes, all firmware is up to date. All DTM is being performed by the Lumagen. Don't believe double tone mapping is advised.

And agree about the Lumagen doing the automatic AR changes. It's #3 on my list of favorite things about the Lumagen. (#1 and 2 are the DTM and how its' plug-and-play.)

You've got a sweet setup yourself there. I bet that room is very immersive.

So, other than some housekeeping (i.e.: turning the rat's nest of wires on the back of the rack into an organized system,) last Saturday was the day for the "final" improvement planned for the theater - the sub/tactile calibration.

Following an in-depth session with @aron7awol and @CallingMrBenzo, the SVS PC4000's, Sunfire True Sub MK II (nearfield) and Crowson actuators are playing together like a rock band. Synchronized, and each making the most out of their respective spaces. Very cool.

Just like I thought the pre- @Chad B picture looked pretty good, I also thought the subs and Crowson's in the theater worked pretty well.

Having seen what the difference is, my conclusion is the same as it was for the projector calibration - if you are using "out of the box settings" seriously consider getting someone who knows what they are doing to do a calibration.

I will report back after a few more movies/scenes, but strong first impression - very worth it.

Last night, we took on the next (chronological) Marvel movie - Iron Man 3.

Great transient response, atmos and image.

We continue to enjoy the new room.

Once again, the upgrades would never had occurred, but for the information and inspiration provided by the members of AVS Forum.

We wouldn't have selected the Stewart Screen, NX7 or Lumagen for the image, or SVS or Mini-DSP for the bass/TR. ...and we certainly wouldn't know about BEQ!

This looks great. What do you have on the walls with the red. Is it curtains or pillars that are the dark columns?

How do you find the red walls? Do you notice any sort of red cast at all. I really like the red but just not sure what visual comprises might come up if I decided to do the same in my future build.

The dark structures on the walls are 8 24x48 sound absorbing panels from Sensible Sound Solutions plus 2 ASC Sound Traps.

There are also velvet curtains on the (painted black) screen wall that are very close to the same color as the other walls. During a movie, the curtains totally disappear (used for masking 16x9.)

The (non-screen) walls are "Bordeaux" - so closer to a cabernet color than what is showing up in the photos. I don't believe they impact the colors on the screen at all (also, as mentioned above, the NX7 and Lumagen haven been professionally calibrated.)

And thanks for the compliment. It has taken 7 iterations as gear (and prices) have improved, but very happy with where we are.
