The Taking Back Of This Forum

125 Views 14 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  SeanMedlock
ALL MEMBERS...

I have not been checking in here as much as I should have. For this I am sorry to all...especially ReplayTV and the nice people from their who come here to help others. I say this because of the issues that have been brought to my attention about how people are attacking other users and ReplayTV itself.

THIS IS NO LONGER GOING TO TAKE PLACE IN THIS FORUM.

I will request that you please re-read the Rules if you need to. I will not allow anyone to attack others or a company on this site. This is not what the site was created for. It is a place to help one another with with units we have...not pass judgement.

I will now make sure I look in on this forum to retake control of the issues that have caused it's dismay. I have also just assigned two mods to this section that will also help to keep the peace.

Once again, I am sorry for letting things get like they did.

Regards,

People are blowing things out of proportion --

This group has been for the most part very polite and friendly.

There have been some issues regarding Panasonic, MV and the release of 3.0 that have been swamping the board, but for the most part they aren't a problem.

I don't think we can seperate the ReplayTV from Showstopper -- Showstopper IS ReplayTV. More to the point I don't think we should seperate them. Aside from two issues having to do with Panasonic, everything you say about ReplayTV pertains to Showstopper and vice versa.

It doesn't help when people parrot rumors and throw blame -- where on earth did people get the idea that "the Replay people have left!!!"

Don't look now -- the sky is falling!

Replay Logan and Marc have been posting , Mike just said he wanted a few days off... With 3.0 finally out I don't blame him -- I need a few days away from the computer every now and then too....

It is just as bad to run around blowing these types of things out of proportion as it is to pop into every thread regardless of topic and preach on the evils of Panasonic.

Even when I took on Mike Lowe and some of the others on the Panasonic topic -- they never really stepped over the line into name calling and flaming. We had some open and rational discussions on the topic. Although they believe something different than me (and I think they repeat their partially incorrect opinions too often and too vehemently) I wouldn't say that they destroyed the board.

Lets not destroy it ourselves by SAYING it is destroyed.

Ciao

I have to disagree with you Joe, I think this forum has become a nightmare of late. It has been a combination of personal attacks and general whining.

My original position on the creation of a new forum for the Showstopper was the same as yours, but I now feel that there should be a seperate forum just for the "macrovision/ moaning about Panasonic" stuff, that way the rest of us that are just interested in ReplayTV (whether it's on a Panasonic or Replay machine) don't have to be bothered by it.

Certain individuals have made it their crusade to go on and on about MV in the Showstopper. They continue to post 300 word essays on the subject repeating points that they made sucessfully ages ago. Other individuals started DEMANDING that Replay FORCE Panasonic to give us 3.0 before they were ready. You'll also notice that most of the trouble makers have all recently joined this forum.

As for the Replay guys suddenly becoming very quiet, it's the truth, even though Mike was the only one to actually come out and say that he'd had enough.

Once upon a time, this forum was a great place for the exchanging of ideas. It is a very rare priviledge to be able to chat with the guys who actually do the programming on one of your A/V devices, especially when that device is something as cool as Replay. Many of the improvements that are part of 3.0, and that where part of 2.0 before it, came directly from this forum. If the Replay guys stick around, many of the features of 4.0 will come from here too, but if they get chased away by all the petty stuff, then we'll all lose.

I think it is a good idea to keep this one simple thought in mind before anyone starts making demands of the Replay guys here. ReplayTV is not a birth right! Whether you bought a Showstopper or a Replay brand machine, you got what you paid for! If it's still running version 2.1, so be it, that's what you paid for. You will get 3.0 for free very soon, but it's not a birth right, if someone else gets it before you, that's life. If you don't like the way Panasonic implemented MV, tell Panasonic, then return your unit. Don't blame Replay as they had nothing to do with it, after all, they did it differently on their machines.

Hopefully, from this point onwards, we can all get back to reality. Let's talk about what we do and don't like in version 3.0, let's talk about what we would like to see in the next version, let's talk about hacking this sucker, but let's quit with the pointless whining!

Rob, As always.... Very well said.

I to strongly believe a ShowStopper forum is needed.

Unfortunately the Panasonic issues will not be going away anytime soon. It is also very evident that some individuals are not looking at the long term affects their comments are having on this forum and the people who are just here to help, & receive help.

Not everyone here is affected by problems of the ShowStopper therefore we should not all have to pay the price of these overly vocal people.

The overly vocal people are having problems with their boxes & creating forum problems for everyone else.

If only she could be paused like my ReplayTV.

nice to see a post of mine deleted before I could refresh the main forum.. thanks!
I suppose...

We have also in the same time learned about the new features in 3.0, how to hack a 60 hour drive (and hopefully an 80), how to reset the remotes to control A/V receivers, gotten lots of questions answered about digital cable (Oww! Carpal Tunnel!), and dolby digital audio, updated the FAQ, tried to address the MV bug through Replay, announced mercata power buys, discussed plusses and minus re TiVo/Replay --

I have to say even with two or three threads on the Evil One (panasonic), and even with some militant folks popping into threads they might not really belong in, and even with the whining over 3.0 -- it STILL is a very productive forum.

Don't forget that.

I wouldn't want to all of a sudden turn around and see only grin-and-happy posts -- it would be a shame if all of a sudden we can only post PC questions and responses. With freedom of expression I'm a bit like the NRA and gun control -- if we don't let one group post about MV/Panasonic Class Action Suits, there may be a day we can't talk about hacking the hard drive.

I like the forum the way it is and don't want to see it destroyed by the very people who want to "save" it.

Thank God!!!!

Anyone who wants to Flame/FUD/... is more than welcome to go to the free-for-all newsgroup alt.video.ptv.replaytv

Beware though that the unmoderated newsgroup contains a lot of cussing, FUD, trolls and outright lies. There is however the odd bit of wizdom taken from this forum!!! If you want quality input, this is the place to be!!!

Mr. Anti-FUD!

Here here. Let's get some civility back to what has mostly been an amazingly informative/funny/helpful forum. Thanks for stepping to the plate David.

Rob, as usual, I couldn't have said it better myself.

I've been amazed that the Replay guys all didn't walk out for good -- and I fervently hope that Mike is back with us real soon. He is an asset that we are worth less as a forum without his presence.

Polite disagreements are not only interesting, but very useful for all of us. The level to which things had lowered themselves to, was unfortunate, at best. Hopefully the dark days are over.

And I can't tell you how grateful I am that Showstoppers finally have 3.0. I'll just leave it at that.

All right David!!! Thanks a lot! I was logging in today to leave a post that I am quitting (not than anyone would miss me) because this forum has degenerated to whining and name calling.

Well said Robman, I agree with your post above and I'm glad someone could put my thoughts into words. I certainly could not. Thanks.

I also agree that there IS real stuff going on, like videodude cracking the hard drive issue. But this is why I have quit usenet.

I think I'll stick around if we are going to get back on the topic of Replay.

Glad to hear it. Things have been a little negative on here. I come here for the entertainment and to possibly get help. The help has been a little weak because I guess all the Replay guys have left. Maybe now they will come back. see http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/Forum13/HTML/002445.html. Let's get back to talking about how great these things are. Al
EXTREMELY GRATEFUL you are "Taking Back the Forum"!

Far too valuable a resource to be allowed to deteriorate.

Occasionally, if folks get angry or want to launch into mini-novels with intrigue and conspiracy theories, please respect your fellow users by "taking it outside" to private email or other "e-graffiti" sites. It ain't here, babe - we all agreed to certain rules of conduct when we signed up here, and inflammatory material is strictly forbidden here.

And: the hosts do have the indisputable right to enforce the rules. We all agreed to that we signed up, too.
It seems that we have alot of agreement here, but to ease the fears of anyone who fears censorship, it's not going to happen. I for one, have no intention of making this a totally happy, "we all love Replay" PC forum. If there's something you don't like about Replay, post away, I have no problem with that.

If you post says something like... "I don't like this new feature of 3.0 because...." that's cool, or if it says "I found the customer suppost terrible because..." that's OK, but if you post says "Why the f**k did those idiots at Replay do this..." or "the morons in customer support..." then there will be a rush to see who can delete it first.

I think all anybody is asking is for a little bit of dignity to return.

I think it's also worth remembering that many of the Replay guys who post here are the actual programmers that write the software, they're not customer service reps, so their posts sometimes might be little more to the point than you might expect from someone who is trained to deal with customers on the telephone. I am of course thinking of the recent incident where a warning was given that if people continue to force downloads this feature will be removed. This warning wasn't dressed up in nice "the customer is always right" PC talk, but it was the complete truth, which personally I'd prefer to hear anytime.

In the immortal words of Rodney Kind... nah, forget Rodney King, we might not all be able to get along, but let's just try and be civil, OK?

Now, back to reality, has anyone figured out the 80MB hack yet?

From the "Sales 101" book. FUD stands for Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt. This is the fuel that drives the sales process.

eg. Showstopper + Macrovision Circus = FUD
