The Wire in HD but 4:3?!!

Can anyone explain to me why HBO's "The Wire" broadcasts at 1080i but comes through in 4:3 AR? I do not have this problem with any other HD broadcast of which I am aware but for some reason The Wire is always 4:3.

Thanks for any thoughts.

It's made that way. The black bars at the sides are part of the picture.

The Wire is not shot in HD. The 1080i signal you're seeing is just HBO upconverting the non-HD signal.

ain't that a kick in the *uts. I discovered that as well many HD channels are actually SD junk. I try to enjoy the true HD and skip the converted SD.
