I have seen screen shots of peoples HTs and they have screen shots of movie Covers on their screens and light controls. I was wondering what programs they are using to control all of this. Also, what does it take to control your Theater lighting with software? How do you wire your lighting?

Thanks

I have 3 Grafik Eyes to control 18 zones in my whole basement including the theater. The theater alone takes up 7 or 8 of those. Then I just have a few single gang wallstations at various locations in the basement. Each wallstation has 6 buttons on it for different scenes.

All line voltage wires from the 18 zones are run to the Grafik Eye location (not a typical wall switch location within the same room). Then you run cat5e form the Grafik Eye locations to the wall stations. Since everything in the system is addressable you can wire the wall stations in series but I ran all of them back to the Grafik Eyes. I also ran a cat5e control wire from my rack location to the Grafik Eye Location as well as one to my theater door. I will have contacts on the door. When you enter the theater it will check if the projector is on or off. If on, then it assumes the lighting is at the level you want it at and will do nothing. If the projector is off, then it will set an opening lighting scene automatically.

I will also have a MSC-400 in my rack that will take commands from my RF remote and control my components and lights.

As far as the 'covers on the screens' that is likely from a Media Server or Home Theater PC. Some popular ones are WD TV and popcornhour. Check out the Media Server forum for more info on those. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=39

What kind of Grafik Eyes are you using? In order to control them from the PC do you have to have a Grafik eye light switch?

Well I don't have them yet. I'm just pre-wired for them. Sheetrock is up and down to the 3rd coat of spackle. GRX-3106 is a 6 zone that I'll probably buy. I won't be controlling the lights form a PC. I'll be controlling them from the wall stations and from my various remotes in the basement (through the MSC-400).

You cna see the prewire of them here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...2#post18175822

I am planning my theater (and the rest of my home) to be controlled by Control4, which controls/automates media, components, lighting, HVAC, security, etc. Its not for everyone but its the cheaper of the home automation companies:

If I had a few more zones then I would have went with Control4. It seemed based on my research that 3 Grafik Eyes was still cheaper than the Control4 but it would have made sense to move up to the Control4 rather than having 4 Grafik Eyes. After all my planning, I actually had 19 zones. I chose to combine 2 zones to give me 18 rather than moving up to the Control4.

With that many, look at Lutron's Homeworks.
