There's a Frozen Purple Snake in the Black Grass.

Ok, this is nothing more than my ranting about the state of HDTV.

All the companies that make HDTV's have a long long long way to go before they get any kind of quality or reliability built into these things. It's is very depressing to spend big dollars on these things only to find the major companies simply walk away from their products.

The DLP chip is a great product, and as far as I know the chip does not give trouble. But the companies that put them in TV's are not doing a good job at all. Out of nine DLP's in our family in the last year only ONE is still with us, so that must be a real fluke?

For me LCD's do not cut it; maybe someday they will, but it's not ready for me.

Plasmas are now appearing very promising; but no one will service these things, and I have learned the hard way you have to have someone to stand behind their product. I have seen way too many plasmas that are defective out of the box or die quickly.

All companies seem to fall into the trap, lets' get it to market first if it don't' work right we will worry about that later - or hope the customer just gives up on it No one company seems interested in making a quality product with any amount of reliability in it.

My latest DLP has been out for 7 weeks now, yesterday they installed everything new inside the box (only 6 months old). As soon as the tech saw the black grass (he wrote on the ticket - rising sun pattern), it played about 5 minutes, and then the firecrackers started. I said what is that noise? He said I don't know? - I never heard that before! They took it away last night. I called the factory company twice - the rudest people I ever talked too, so far their basic response has been tuff

So I took our HD recorder from the den, and hooked it up to the 20 year old 32 Trinitron, so we could watch 24 and Jericho last night. Man, I forgot what black detail is all about. That set was only $400 new. And a 26 year old 24 Trinitron still work perfectly. The only two TV's left in the house, that actually work!

Yea, I'm all for HDTV, let me know when they make one that works!

So are you trying to get a rise out of plasma owners by posting this here? Why post this in the plasma section if not? Seems like your main beef is with DLP?

I'm curious, where and when have you seen way too many defective dying plasmas? There are plasmas that have had issues, but they are in the minority - at least from what I've seen in this plasma section of the forum. There are a ton more people who are happy with the technology than not. Maybe this can't be said about DLP owners I don't know. I wouldn't buy a DLP set myself.

I understand you are frustrated with your DLP but take a deep breath. Starting a fight here won't help anyone.

Hope they get your set fixed. Good luck.

Do some homework. All technologies have flaws and potential problems. That is why researching WHO to buy from is as important as what you buy.

Buy from an authorized dealer, and get your self and extended warranty. I have never in my life, on any product, had a problem getting a company I purchased from honor their responsibility to service said product.

Perhaps I am in the minority, but I have no doubts that if I have an issue while covered, Pioneer and/or Invision will help. It may take a little work and some hoop jumping, but diligence and perisitency have made me successful in EVERY attempt to have anything faulty fixed or replaced.

Buy from the right person, and be persistent if you need service. has always worked for me.

Now go buy a plasma! : )

It's sad, but we live in a very short-term, disposable world. I would argue that it isn't DLP, Plasma or HD TVs that are unreliable - it is nearly ALL consumer goods. Remember that refrigerator your mom & dad had for 28 years? Or the car that lasted 11 years & 220,000 miles? Or the 35mm camera you bought in 1974 that STILL takes great pictures? Good luck getting that kind of service today from ANYTHING other than the very elite class of professional products. Is it the percentage of electronics in today's products? Or the massive pressures to drive down manufacturing costs? Or planned obsolescence built into the design? I don't know. I do know that product life-cycles are dramatically shorter today - it seems as though most people don't want to own their TVs for 10 years, or their cars for 200K miles. If the majority of people buy replacment products before the unit wears out, why should the mfr spend the additional money to achieve the longer life?

As to products that die early - I don't know, but I suspect it is all related. Build the products cheaper and build more of them, and I suspect QA/QC and reliability suffers. Add in the warehouse & mail-order buying trends, and I can imagine that more DOA and infant mortality cases will result. OTOH, I know many, many people who have large screen DLP, LCD & CRT RP HD displays that are 5+ years old and still going strong - clearly there ARE people who do not have the same issues as the OP.
