Thin HT Speakers for Plasma TV

1270 Views 15 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  Lindahl
I have a Panny 50" plasma mounted on a tilting wall mount and am looking for wall mount speakers that will look decent next to the plasma tv. The speakers I have looked at so far are:

DefTech Mythos Twos (L/R/C): List $350 each

Monitor Audio Radius 225 (L/R/C): List $350 each

B&W VM 1 (L/R/C): List $200 each

B&W FPM5 (L/R/C): List $750 each

I will complement these with the same brand rear surround speakers, each one of the choices has an appropriate match. For sub, I am planning on spending ~$500 for a Velodyne sub (have the impression that Velo makes the best subs).

Please give me suggestions / help on one of the speaker sets for L/R/C, either one of the sets listed above, or, something else you would like to suggest. Also, are the FPM5s worth the difference in price ? Thanks

I'd recommend the NHT L5 System . Obviously not the same price range...

If you're in NM, there's a dealer in Albuquerque that knows his stuff.
can you please give me a rough estimate of what these speakers would cost ? thanks.
My Vienna Acoustic Webern's sound great and look cool to boot. I got them open box at $550/each, IIRC they're $750/each new.

Here's a pic of them on the stand, but they can be easily wallmounted too.

With 2.5" 'bass' drivers, how low can these go, realistically? I seriously doubt they hit that 80 Hz (claimed) at a usable level. I know there are 3 of them, but still... :)

I'm guessing that they won't be able to. Unless the drivers are 5.25" or above, getting down to 80Hz before dropping off may not be achievable. Other than the NTH, every speaker listed so far has drivers smaller than 5.25". In this arena, unless you're willing to spend quite a bit, as well as settle for getting bigger flat panel speakers, there are definitely trade-offs.

They can be found for around $500/ea.
I've been doing research on these for a while and compiling a list for auditioning (7" deep.
$900 for 5 speakers,

You might also check out these Magnepan MMGW.Walled mounted flat planars.

O ,lol, just saw that they were on your list :)
Relative to your list, Costco has the Jamo A 360 for 1/3 of retail (much, much less than you have listed) At that price I would consider it a bargain plus you can get a full refund if you don't like it.

I have it crossed over to a subwoofer at 150 Hz and find the performance pretty good considering it is a large compromise (e.g. 40 x 4 x 3.4 in size and using multiple 3.5 in drivers) from my other HT configuration (Madisound's Audax kits).

I didn't have much options with my set up and needed the L/C/R form factor

The construction is very good except for the use of spring clips on the wire terminals. The only color is black.
JBL's new line of L series speakers are designed thin and for wall mounting. The one review out there on the web is positive. Presently there aren't a lot of locations to listen. They are slowly showing up at Fry's. Probably worth a listen if clean and dynamic goes along with your TV Movie viewing agenda.

Good Luck.

It looks like there is too much choice already !

Thanks for the input. This may be a good choice for me since I am looking for something that is not deep (wall mountable) but has largish drivers (5" or more). Most of the other choices that are skinny tall speakers seem to have 4" dirvers, whereas this JBL seems to have 6" drivers. I will go listen to them at Frys. Anyone else heard these speakers ???
I have heard the L820 wall mounts and I can say they are very fine speakers in deed. I want to save up some money to make the purchase on these. The mids and highs are pretty dang good. I highly suggest you do your self a favor and let your ears listen to these :)
Another one I came across recently were Angstrom Sonatas carried by newegg, haven't found any reviews on them yet, but apparantly the guy who designed their speakers started Paradigm and, later, bought back Angstrom. The name has since been sold again, but apparantly their speakers haven't deviated much, if at all. This information makes me confident enough to at least pay the shipping and try them out. That said, I've read their customer service isn't great, but at least speakers don't break down like most products.

EDIT: Axiom W22's are another I passed over due to the brand's brightness (haven't heard that particular model, but I doubt it differs).
