Think I got my speakers.. subwoofer help

Ok, I have a 14X14 room, with one wall open to the kitchen (TV is along that half wall). I have a Pioneer Elite VSX-91TXH A/V.

The speakers I believe I'm going to purchase are:

Fronts - Aperion Intimus 533-T Tower Speaker - x2

Center - Aperion Intimus 533-VAC Center Channel Speaker

Side Surrounds - Aperion Intimus 534-SS Dipole-Bipole Surround Speaker - x2

Back surround - Aperion Intimus 532-LR Bookshelf Speaker

First off do you think this system is a good value for the money?

Second, I need a subwoofer recommendation. I was looking to keep the whole speaker setup below $2000 but it looks like I might be going a little over. I have about $600 or so to play with.

Thanks!

Hi there,

In my opinion, there are really only two top contenders in the $600 range for subwoofers at the moment. The Epik Knight and the MFW-15. The latter was just reviewed and tested by Craigsub.

It scored higher than a Velodyne DD-18 on both movies and music. It is about as close to an JL Fathom as you are likely to get. It is double the performance of an Epik Valor at 20 hz. The subwoofer is quite large and is ported. It looks very nice as well. For an additional $100, you can get a really nice finish too.

The Epik Knight hasn't been reviewed but it should be a stellar performer. Whether it will perform similarly or better than the MFW-15 remains to be seen. I'm not sure what finish options the Knight has so I guess you should email Chad for more info on that.

Cheers.

for your room i would get the eD A3-300 with the upgraded driver 130v.2 for $500 shipped
Cool, thanks good choices. You don't think the MFW-15 would be overkill for my room size?

Also, I went to the AV123 site and the sub wasn't on there.
There is no such thing as overkill. Once the subwoofer levels have been properly calibrated, the word "overkill" then turns to "headroom".

As far as I know, on Monday, the AV123 site is getting updated.

--Regards,
Cool, I'll check it out then. Any idea how much this bad boy weighs?
If memory serves, it weighs around 54 kg (120 pounds). Apparently the build quality of this subwoofer is exemplary.

--Regards,
The Epik Knight comes only in Black. There are pics of some on the website in Rosewood but I've never seen one on the forums with that finish. I'd get the Knight if you need your sub now, or the MFW-15 if you're willing to wait until March or so.
Cool, thanks everyone. I think I'm ordering the Aperion system tomorrow. I'll let you guys know what sub I end up going with.
Well, I was going to go with the Knight, but all their amps are on backorder right now and the response I got said it's unknown when they will be back in stock. Strongly considering an SVS sub now.

I was going to go with the Aperion 10" sub to complete the set, but I couldn't find any "real" reviews of it anywhere. The salesman did tell me they are on par with SVS and Hsu though * imagine that

The new PB12-NSD is an excellent sub for only $599. Honestly, until a few months ago, it probably would be the best recommendation out there for the money. Epik, eD, and now AV123 have all come out with monster subs in the past few months and completely changed everyone's expectation of what kind of sub $600 can buy. If you can't bear the wait, the PB12-NSD should give a very powerful HT experience in your 14x14 room, though waiting for the Knight or MFW-15 will probably get you even better bass. My opinion is that all of these subs are the real deal. Good luck.
As much as I like the SVS PB12-NSD, it's not even remotely in the same league as the MFW-12. Heck, even the SVS PB12-Ultra is not in the same league as the MFW-12.

I think we are forgetting that this is a subwoofer that approaches the performance of an SVS PB13-Ultra and equaled the JL Audio Fathom 13 in performance and is the same price as the SVS PB12-NSD.

I'm not trying to deter someone from choosing another option here but in terms of air moving capability, low distortion and overall build quality, the MFW-15 is no brainer.

--Regards,
You will probably all be dissapointed but I went with the 20-39PCi from SVS. I have some space limitations and the tech advised me on that one. I'll let you know how I like it. Thanks for all of your help, even though I didn't use it...

I don't see how anyone could be disappointed with the 29-39, great subs, I had it for a while until I got fed up with hearing about the black watercooler in the house, no matter what the sales rep said it blows the Aperion 10 away, good choice.

You can't go wrong with it and it will kick some serious bass in your room. Congrats and post your thoughts once you set it up.

I'm not disappointed...it's not my sub
. And even if it were, I don't think I'd be disappointed. The 20-39 PCi is a serious sub. Sometimes space constraints are a real issue, and I think the 20-39, while not as powerful as a MFW-15 or Epik Knight is an excellent sub for your situation. It should produce very good, deep, visceral bass in a ~1600 cubic foot room. I almost went with a 20-39 PCi myself, instead electing to go with dual PB10's (I too have quite a space constraint in my 11x10 room). I predict you'll be very happy with its performance. Make sure to let us all know what you think when you have it all set up! Congratulations

Stephen
