I was in the market to spend around 5-7K for a new TV and that put me in the range of a Samsung 617 or a Toshiba LCOS. I had actually ordered the LCOS, only to have it dissappear. I had a 617 for a month before I returned it because it started giving me a headache after extended viewing sessions. I wanted a large screen, that would be easily seen in daylight as my room is very bright. And, I wanted bright, vivid images. I also wanted zero burn in on the screen. (xbox/pc gaming/web browsing).
Then one day I stumbled on the FP forum and read how somebody was using a Sanyo plv-70 with a 100 inch Da-lite High power screen and said he had no problem watching HDTV during the day or with bright lights on. (the high gain the the High power screen was important). I didn't really believe the guy as we all know projectors are terrible with alot of ambient light. But then as I looked into it further, I realized many others had similar experiences. I would definitely take a 120 inch screen over a 61 inch screen, if the picture really was good enough and ambient light wasn't a problem.....
I never saw a sanyo plv-70 before, but since the Samsung 617 wasn't everything I had dreamed of and the toshiba LCOS is difficult to find, I bit the bullet and blindly ordered the sanyo PLV-70 over those 2 RPTVs. Basically going on the word on the AVS forum boards. I also bought from an AVS affiliate with no probs at all.
The first time I saw the glorious 120 inch bright image while sunlight was streaming into my room, I almost cried. Now, I see what all those people in the FP forum keep saying how they can never go back to regular TV. In total I spent a tad more than the 617 and just a little bit less than a toshibal LCOS. Is it more trouble to hook up and start watching a DVD or TV...yes..a little..but that 120 inch screen is worth the price of admission. Just wanted to share my buying process for others in similar situations.
PS: I'm still going to buy a samsung DLP RPTV for the bedroom once the prices drop a bit. Those RPTVs still have their uses.
