Right now I am currently running a 7.1 mod2 orb audio system with a mod4 center channel. The left, right , and center are mounted on the fireplace wall, and I was thinking of switching them out. I was thinking of putting towers up there since I have a clearance of 40" on both sides for the towers and then would have to mount the center channel. What are some good brands to look at, what would be a good upgrade for me? I do like what I have now, but I am just thinking about testing the waters.

Amazon has the Polk Monitor 65T speakers for $160 each, and the 150C center speaker for $200.

That might be the best you can get for that budget.

Tower speakers need to be on the floor. What do you mean by "putting them up there"???

If they are not going to be on the floor, look at the Polk RTiA3 instead.

 Infinity P163 and P251 Center

I like these better than the Polk speakers and the current sale is very good. Hard to beat this value, and being front ported they can go on the wall fine. This also leaves you money to upgrade your sub.

+1, the Infinitys are much better than the Polks. If you want to beat Infinity with a Polk, you will have to step up to the RTi series. One change I would make is switch to the Primus c351 center, it is a worthwhile upgrade.

Yeah that center is better, but unfortunately it isn't on sale. You would still be well under budget though with the bigger center: http://www.amazon.com/Infinity-Primus-PC351-Three-way-Center-Channel/dp/B0044D1788/ref=sr_1_3?s=aht&ie=UTF8&qid=1396362228&sr=1-3

This is what I mean. I have a fireplace and it has a stone man tale that comes out. You can see where the current orb speakers sit on the wall. The left and right would be replaced with towers and sit in the same spot or a little over and sit on the brick that comes out. You can't see the brick coming out that well, but in the picture those blankets are sitting on it. That brick lip up there is 17in off the floor and 16in deep.

brutal location for the TV, as you realize by now, real bad angle. There has to be a better place for it. There just has to be!

It is a bad location for the TV. But, our family does not watch TV all that much, what we watch are movies. That is why I am installing a projector and will have a motorized screen to come down for better viewing in front of the plasma and fireplace.

The are really no other options in the room for the tv. If you are sitting facing the tv, you have a 17ft long bay window in back of the couch. The wall on the left is 8FT and has a shelf on it for all of our movies and also the parrot cage goes there for winter. No other options to put those two items in the room..No wall space. on the right you have 4ft of wall space that is sunken in that is a built in shelf, then the next 6 feet is a salt water tank. Literally nowhere to put the tv but there. Sometimes you work with what you got.

You might have issues with the screen coming down in front of the speakers. I do not know if they make acoustically transparent motorized screens.

Here is another shot of the room with the ledge cleared off. Where the candle holders are, the towers would go. Where the Orbs are now I would mount the bookshelf speakers. I would replace the center with the new center. I think the following would make a substantial improvement over the sound. Its just a matter of deciding on towers or bookshelfs.

I was thinking of the

P163 http://www.amazon.com/Infinity-Primus-Two-way-Bookshelf-Satellite/dp/B0045NCB32

Tower p363 when it goes on sale again. http://www.amazon.com/Infinity-Primus-P363-Three-way-Floorstanding/dp/B0046A8R3M/ref=pd_sim_e_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=0Z4MZ0V447DZNEM1ZK5A

And center PC351 http://www.amazon.com/Infinity-Primus-Three-way-Speaker-Center-Channel/dp/B0044D1788/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1291827968&sr=1-1

All your speakers are too high. I can't tell if they're angled down at all. So, using towers, which you can't easily angle safely, they would be much too high. The speakers are designed to be used with the tweeters close to ear level with the listener in a seated position.

Also, as was mentioned earlier, do they make acoustically transparent, motorized drop down screens? If not, you need to rethink the whole setup.

IMO the best solution would be to rip out the fireplace and start from there.

They do make acoustically transparent motorized screens. Right now where the speakers are mount they are angle down slightly. Our ears vary but on average are around 41inch off the ground. The speakers are 53 inches off the ground. The towers are 39in tall, but the tweeter is lower then that. which puts it lower then the 53in height of the other speakers. I am thinking they might be the best option as they will more inline with our head.

Ripping out the fireplace is not an option as I am married. You work with what you are given. I know my speakers are mounted too high, but as I said its not the best thing, but its my option right now. The viewing distance from the tv and speakers is 13 ft. I

The towers would be sitting on 18" and are 39" tall. That's 57". The tweeter is maybe 5" from the top. Places it about the same as you have now, but the tower really can't be angled down. Plus the upper driver is a mid range that would be too high also (for best sound). If you're going to be using a good sub you might be better off with a bookshelf model that can be mounted lower or placed on short stands.

The Primus center is pretty large, though you should be able to bolt some angle brackets to the FP and set the center on them.

Should be nice with the drop down screen.

Correct with measuring the tweeter would come out around 51in off the ground. How sturdy are the short shelf stands for speakers as I am not opposed to this, just i have 3 boys under the age 3. This why i was leaning towards mounting them are getting the towers which would be harder to move.

Putting towers on that ledge shouldn't even be considered as an option. They will be too high and right up against the back wall. Maybe some taller LCR speakers like the Ascend 340 or Arx A2 could work.

My room is 15x20. The room is larger in this new home then when I first got the orbs. When listening to system now it just feels as if it is lacking. I also feel as if I am trying to turn the volume up, if that makes sense. Its not as immersive as it once was. Don't get me wrong, I love the orbs for what they are small, out of the way, and great sound. But I am just wondering if they arent enough now. Before I could get lost in the movie and sound, now not so much. I am trying to bring that feeling back. I am pretty sure my sub is also too small for this room. I have the super 8" from orb. I also plan on upgrading this also at some point down the line this year, which leans me away from towers a little.
