Thoughts about Energy speaker set up

2607 Views 16 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  john8726
Long time lurker and reader, finally need some advice.

I am looking to purchase either an Onkyo TX-SR607 or Denon AVR-1910 (Both about $500). I am looking at Energy for my entire speaker set up and could use some advice from you guys.

Thinking of getting:

(2) Energy CF-50 Floorstanding speakers for the front ($399 each)

(1) Energy CC-10 Center ($299)

(2) Energy RC10 Bookshelf speakers for the rear ($279 pair)

(1) Energy S12.3 Sub ($800ish, appears they are not widely available)

Both of the receivers are capable of bi-amping, and I was thinking of bi-amping the front CF-50 speakers.

Suggestions, opinions, or thoughts on any items?

Thanks in advance.

Many people think bi-amping is a waste of time, especially when you're using the same receiver to bi-amp instead of a seperate amp.

Is this some kind of package deal? Haven't seen the s12.3 in a long while. Probably not a package since you're throwing RC-10s in the mix.

No package deal, just kind of what I came up with while looking around and reading.

I can purchase different speakers (similarly priced) if they are better performance, or if someone has any suggestions.

From what I have read the s12.3 is a good sub, performs well, good sound. Just didn't know if there is something out there that is a lot better for the same amount of money.
You haven't provided us a total cost so I can't be sure if you can do better for the same amount of money.

IMO your rear channel speakers are going to sound better than your fronts.

And I surely wouldn't spend $800 on a s12.3 when you can get a powerful sub like the Elemental Designs A2-300 for $350.

yes, RC-10's in the back are a waste of money with C-series up front. Just get a pair of CB-10's for surrounds as they will match.

The S12.3 is a monster sub but is not available anymore, and for the $800 list price you can get a LOT OF SUBWOOFER. There is no reason to "match" the subwoofer brand to the speakers, so if you can really spend that much on a sub you have a lot of options.

How big is your room?

Really?

I too have been shopping (read: dreaming) about new speakers, and have given Energy lots of consideration. Care to explain why the RC-10's are better front speaker than the CF-50 towers? What about the RF-50's?

Thanks in advance.
The living room is 14ft x 17ft (10 ft ceiling). It has a wall on 2 sides. The other 2 sides are open (one opens to the dining room 9.6ft x 11ft 10ft ceiling), the other side opens to a hallway. (almost the exact floorplan/size here: http://www.vestahomesok.com/files/pdf/47b08c82f13a2.pdf )

As for the Sub, I am open to whatever for the $800 or under. If another sub will do a great job with shaking things up. In fact I could upgrade to the RC-30 Tower ($550 each) by saving $300 on a sub and buying one that is around $500. (Assuming the RC-30 would be good with the RC-10 rears)

Thanks for all the quick help guys, I really appreciate it.

If all speakers sold for their true MSRP I can't name a better speaker pair for $600 than RC-10. There are others I would consider, but I wouldn't say they are better.

Disclaimer: I haven't heard any ID speakers, but have listened to most semi-affordable B&Ms.

The RC's are better than the C's. So, if you have the budget, an all RC setup will be awesome. If you don't, get an all C-series setup and it will still sound great

The subwoofer decision is largely independent of the speakers. It really depends on (1) how big your room is and (2) what your expectations are for bass. It's all about how picky you are. If you just want pretty good bass to feel some rumble during movies, you could spend $350-400 and get something like the eD A2-350 or the HSU STF-2. You will probably be happy. If you are expecting to get massive, theater level reference bass, stepping up to the $600-800 class of subwoofers will be a big jump in terms of overall output and low-end extension.

Thank you very much.

Now I just need to find an online retailer that will give me a below MSRP price for the bundle. If you know of any feel free to PM me.

Oh, and did you mean the ed a2-300? I don't see an A2-350, I see an A5-350 buat that one is a little higher.
Based on your prices in post #1, you're willing to spend about $2200 for your setup.

In that room you would probably be fine with 4 RC-10s, an RC-LCR center and the eD A2-300 subwoofer. If you buy the RC-10s from vanns I'm sure they'd give you a break on the RC-LCR, maybe knock a couple of hundred off the $650 price. If that center is too large for your space the RC mini center would work too. I'm sure that price is negotiable for that center also, especially when buying a 5 speaker package.

If you're determined to get towers up front you can get RC-50 towers under $1000/pr on ebay. then get your RC-10s for rears and RC-LCR for center channel.
Agree w/ others, go for the RC line. I already have a pair of RC-10 that i've been using for music listening (really good monitor) especially for 279/pair. I'm gonna use that pair for HT and this will be my setup:

Front: RC-10 ($279)

Center: RC Mini center ($275) (or you can get the LCR if you want to spend 650). RC mini center is good enough for me and it match well w/ the RC-10

Surround: RC Mini ($99 each) (small & easier to mount on the wall, sufficient as surround)

Sub: SVS PC12-NSD ($650 (including shipping))

for a total of 1400 for the speakers.

For a/v receiver, i'm thinking about emotiva setup (UPC-1 & XPA-5)). What do you guy think?

p.s.

Haven't order the sub and mini center yet. Anyone know of good deal on those two? I missed out on the $168 deal for the mini center at vanns
. Seem like for SVS the only place to order them is directly from SVS.
