Thoughts on new HTPC parts list

Motherboard - MSI K8NGM2IFID $85.50

CPU - Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego $211.90

Memory - Corsair Value Select 2 x512 $81

Hard Drive - Seagate 300gb SATA $100 after rebate

Hauppage PVR-150 or maybe PVR-500 $88 or $139

All tossed inside of a Lian-Li case i just retired. I want to use it as sort of a test rig for trying various Media Center softwares. I like the look of gbpvr as it is an open source project but will try Windows MCE 2005 as well.

Any suggestions appreciated.

What aree you doing that you need a 64bit/3700 cpu for? Is this for gaming, or just TV/DVD?

Also, I'd recommend a smaller boot disk, use the 300GB for data.
I was thinking that for burning DVD's or other such task's that a little more horse power wouldnt hurt. I wouldnt mind keeping the price down but at the same time id like to stick with an Athlon 64 in case i ever wanted to hop on the 64 bit bandwagon.

Also the cheapest 64 bit 939 processor is the 3000+ for around $139.

So unless i change motherboards and go with a much less expensive Sempron the price is still up there.

The 300 gigger is on sale and with the rebate the price cant be beat. I would put the OS on a separate partition from data.

Im not a gamer and this will be primarily for HTPC use. But like some other projects of mine in the past it may end up being someones PC at some point.
The 3700+ is AWESOME. My next PC (HTPC or not) will have a 3700+ or 4000+. The San Diego core is exceptional. Not only does the extra horsepower not hurt, it's CHEAP!

I have to agree about the smaller boot disc. I don't know if it's still true, but XP used to become rather sluggish on larger drives. Partitioning won't solve this problem since the disk will have to work harder when it's partitioned. Just get a small, quiet HD as a backbone... A Seagate 80GB would be nice...

Well, it's free but not "open-source", from the main page:

"Is this project open source? No sorry. GB-PVR supports open interfaces, but for now the core engine code is not publically available"

You can also try Media Portal, this one is open source, and also looks good. :)

(sorry, I can't post the link. I'm getting an error stating I can't post with urls till I make 5 posts..) Just google for it.

I'm also assembling my 1st HTPC, but am still considering if I'll go with a sempron (cheaper) or the athlon way.

Thanks for the reply Carlos i did read that after i posted of course.

Even so it does appear pretty interesting and free. I did see there was a plugin for commercial advance. Dont know if i should even mention that here but?

Ive grown pretty attached to my replaytv and even though the CA only works about 75% of the time it still works.

I havent looked closely at the other offerings and was looking at Media Portal today.

Itll be a fun project to test them all out. For the price of that 3700+ its hard to refuse.

Just added up all the parts and im still looking at $650 going with the PVR-500 and a Zalman 7000b HSF. May have to reconsider till after the holidays or go a cheaper route. I have a few old P3's sitting in the basement in various stages of disrepair. Im sure i could hobble something together slap Linux on it and go to town but what fun would that be?
If it were me I'd get the 146 or 148 Opteron instead of the 3700+

These chips tend to overclock higher than the 3700+.

Its pretty common to get 3 gig out of these $200 chips, some are doing 2.8-2.9 at STOCK Vcore.

They also have a San Diego thread over there.

Pay attention to the dates on the posts, that will give you an idea of what STEPPINGS are out there NOW, and what they are doing.

I just put together a HTPC with almost the same specs except I opted for the 3200+ Socket 939 Venice core. So far I am extremely happy with its performance and capabilities. It can handle 720p and 1080i ts files and WMV-HD with slightly less than 50% CPU utilization. Haven't done too much ffdshow tweaking yet but this is probably where your 3700+ will come in handy. If you don't plan to do any ffdshow tweaks then a 3700+ is probably more than you are going to need for while.

I am using the DVI output and haven't experienced any of the darkness mentioned in the 6150 thread, I think that only applies to component out.

Not to turn this thread into a San Diego vs Opteron debate but...

You got me looking and reading the reviews on the Opterons. If i were an overclocker gaming kind of guy id go for it.

From what im reading both the San Diego and the Opteron are based on the same core. There doesnt appear to be any official support for running them on the MB im interested in. I think to play it safe i would stick with the 3700+.

Ordered the PVR-500 tonight from buy.com for $126 after 10% coupon i recieved in an email from them the other day. I may go with a WD 250gb SATA II HD for $104 instead of the Seagate. Gonna try to wait for some deals on the other components and peicemeal things together over time.

Anyone care to comment on the picture quality using the PVR-500 out to a SDTV and what type of connection would work best?

I wanted to add this link about the apparent lack of overclocking ability on the MSI K8NGM2-FID board. Its a review of 3 different 6150 MB's but there is a lot of talk about OC on the MSI board.

From what I understand WD drives are pretty noisy. Seagate and Samsung are the quiet ones. Seagate also seems to have the best rep.

Thats cool, I was just giving you the heads up on whats out there(for pretty much the same $) in case you weren't aware.

Word is the Opteron works fine with the 6100 series, from a few folks over there at Xtreme...

One guy has a Opty 170 ( dual core), running on the Biostar 6100..

Overclocked to 2.75.

I guess the Foxtron SEEMS to do the best clocking so far, but results are fairly minimal, basically due to lack of ownership.

I can tell ya one thing, overclocking as far as MY cooling allows has helped me run higher settings in FFDSHOW, thats the reason I threw that out there.

I think alot of folks on here who normally wouldn't overclock, do because of the demand on the CPU using FFDSHOW.

GL, and have fun with whatever ya get.
