Thoughts on using Pro-Amplifier in Home 2.1 setup

579 Views 8 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  kevinmat
Alright, I have been building my setup for a decent while now. Upgrading various components as my finances would allow. I have gotten to what I consider to be a good place for quite awhile.

Current Setup:

Pair of Klipsch RF 82's

Onkyo 8050

Sunfire HRS8

My question comes with the fact that I do not believe my Onkyo can really drive the 82's. A friend had several unused Crown XLS Amps around and gave me one to try out. The amp he gave me is a Crown XLS 1500.

I plan on using it, just not sure which connection would be better.

Basically I have my Samsung 55 connected to a Mac Mini via HDMi and the AUX connected to the Onkyo. The thing I have been wondering about is whether I should connect the Crown to the Onkyo or if I should run just the Crown through one of my mixing boards.

I have a relatively small space, however I am not too concerned about that as unhappy neighbors is not really an issue. I am simply curious as what would be suggested to really see the speakers perform.

Let me know if you have any thoughts,

Thanks.

.

That's a curious belief. Is there something other than internet peer pressure that leads you to it?
It is simply based on rated wattage. It is at 80w/channel and the Klipsch's are rated to handle considerably more power than that.

Also, I seem to blow through HT receivers.. I have had 3 I believe in the past 2 years. I tend to drive them above what they can deliver.

I don't generally go off of what one of my "internet peer's says".. I like to get information from a variety of sources.
The power ratings of speakers are maximum ratings. They are the levels which, if exceeded, could cause damage. You aren't likely to get anywhere near 10% of that rating in actual use. What you have is perfectly competent to drive them.
I understand that kinda, since I happen to have a Crown XLS 1500 on hand. Would I notice anything significant from using it either alone or in conjunction with the Onkyo?

Not really. The Klipsch RF82 is rated at 150W RMS / 600W Peak. "8 ohms compatible"

The Onkyo 8050 is rated at 80 wpc RMS and 150 wpc Dynamic Power @ 4 ohms.

If we compare RMS power ratings, the speaker can take only 3 dB more power than the receiver can produce. What is 3 dB? It is 6 clicks on most remote controls volume buttons. Pick up your remote right now, play something at a comfortable level and tap in 6 clicks. What do you hear?

There is no such thing as driving a HT receiver above what they can deliver. That would violate the law of conservation of energy.

How about a brief story of the demise of your last 3 receivers?

Driving speakers with amplifiers that are rated at less power than the speaker's max is like driving a car that has a 120 mph top speed at 80 mph. If your car can go 120 why don't you routinely drive it at 120? I think that most people would say that they are not comfortable driving their cars at 120 mph. Too much traffic, curves that are too tight and not banked enough, guys in blue uniforms driving cars with gumball machines on top... You don't drive your speakers to the max because you are usually not comfortable doing it.

Furthermore, your receiver does not have anything on it that compares to a speedometer. Very few audiophiles know what power levels they drive their amplifiers to. We can estimate what kind of power you actually use if you had a SPL meter, but I'll bet that you don't have one, and knowing how much power you are using isn't really that interesting to you. You won't buy one, even for $20...

You mentioned the room being small. Based on that and the higher sensitivity of your speakers, what you have now should easily achieve ear blistering spls. You won't hear a qualitative change unless you're regularly clipping the Onkyo.

But, hey, if it's on hand, go ahead and try it. At levels where the Onkyo runs out of steam the Crown will just be loafing along. If you've been overdriving the Onkyo (doubtful, but you never know), you'll notice the improvement of unclipped power right away. Just use caution so you don't damage your speakers, and more importantly, your hearing!
Try the crown, you will be rewarded! I have been trying to find an amp to drive some B&W CM5's, I had a Yamaha RX-V1900, tried a NAD D3020, then a Teac AI-501DA (best of the bunch by far) then someone suggested giving the Crown a try, so I tried out a NXLS2000 amp - seemingly way, way beyond what I would need. Well, I was shocked at the result, soundstage was huge, music was - all I can say is - alive, just wonderful accurate, detailed sound. Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder, but this admirer is smitten!
Just in case you are wondering, I am using a Teac UD-501 DAC so needed a volume control and used this: SM Pro Audio M-Patch 2 Passive Volume Control/Switch Box (find it on Amazon) - great little box with balanced xlr in/outs, doesn't color the sound at all.
