THT vs. HSU for music?

5334 Views 102 Replies 18 Participants Last post by  mj79
so i picked up bills plans to build the tuba ht, and i am having second thoughts. i was planning on the 24 inch wide version of the tht, and it would be playing along my infinity primus p362 mains. i do watch a lot of movies on this setup also, so i want to have that low extension, but i really want my music to sound as good is it can. i am currently using the dayton built HSU10 / ES10 sub. i think it sounds pretty good right now, but of course, i want a bit more output and extension. so, i guess my question is, what will sound better? a top notch hsu sub, or the tht? or another brand sub?

I went from dual a7s-650 to dual thts and don't regret it at all.
you want an opinion on a 15" horn loaded sub that is 18 cubic feet vs. a 10" ported sub that is 3 cubic feet?

i cant speak for everyone, but I just built the THT 24" and love it more every day, Just fine tuning the calibrations make such a huge difference .. I too listen to alot of music and play alot of Games with music ( rock band GH etc ) And in MY experience it plays music very well, I think the edge goes to the movies on this thing in MY house, ( as I found out all rooms react different , But its such a low end monster that it really brings the movies to life, And Ive only listened at or above reference 2 times.. It plays ALL types of music from classical to rap and techno with everything in between.. The Hsu is great but Im assuming is probably 3 times the price, and will not have the performance levels in the higher levels. But thats just me

I dunno how to describe a bomb going off in your house as good SQ, But it sounds like a very nice smooth bomb going off in your house..

lol lol lol lol
purely sound quality? Should thump HSU. the SQ is crazy good. I have sealed array..LLT..and this is just the best of every world...again...you are not only getting ridiculous output and extension...but great SQ!...no regrets..just do it...go nuts for abour 3 weeks...and then come back and tell us about it

So you're saying it has ridiculous extension?
The THT if built properly should have better SQ than your HSU or majority of your ported or sealed alignments commercial or DIY. Due to the lack of distortion. Horns in general produce very little measureable distortion. As Air Supply said completely disregard the threads and post as of late. They are honestly ridiculous, obsurd and downright offensive
! LOL. Youve got to realize alot of people dont truely know what distortion sounds like and can easily mistake it for "bass". The people who are questioning their the THT's are use to "commercial noise makers" producing upwards of 10% THD at their max levels. Which is still less than half of the volume levels THT is capable of with unmeasureable THD. And as stated before they dont know how to properly integrate into the system and/or are putting it in bad "bass" areas if i may call it that. I really think its more that theyre use to distortion and dont know how a quality sub is suppose to sound. But who knows they could be right and it could be complete junk. Its a leap of faith and if your willing to take it i can no longer say you may like it due to all the crazy's around here lately
. But i can tell you in my room built properly and calibrated properly the THT delivers great chest pounding, eye ball rattling, and high quality LFE for both HT and music

Haha my thread must have really touched a nerve with you.. This is the 3rd time ive seen a random nonchalant jab at that topic ..
Its not a touched nerve or just you at all. Im half joking half serious if you know what i mean. Theres been atleast what 4 of you THT bashers in the last week lol? And 2 or 3 have all been resolved by simple trouble shooting and proper placement and calibration. Of course everyone is due their respective opinions. But its unfair and disheartening to a potential builder to come to the DIY section and the first few threads they see are negative about the THT when its not the "SUBS" fault. I think the same thing would happen if someone posted a thread "SVSPB13 ultra........mediocre....disappointing.....junk box". And then other's followed suite just to find out the problem wasnt the sub at all. People would be put off by these threads for no good reason. Its not a biggy to me since im happy with my results. But im still going to mess with you and joke about it thats just my nature. No worries man.

no worries.. But I will paypal you one whole dollar if you can show me where I bashed the THT, OTHER than agreeing with you to throw it in the trash and use it as firewood. Me insulting myself for being a dumbass will not get you that crisp dollar bill

Could you be any more condescending than that? So if someone doesn't like the sound of the THT then automatically you assume that they don't have any experience with quality subs and they are "ridiculous". Yeah sure, this is my first horn and yeah it has lots of output but I can tell you this, it is very very very sensitive to positioning. yeah the AVS clan is dry humping the THT; but it isn't the end all be all in subs and don't let them convince you otherwise.
