Please note that mounting is very important or else you'll get hotspotting and glare due to its glossy nature. It's definitely higher gain than blackout or 1.1 gain retail Bretford screen (I tested it by draping half of screen with each material). Heck for $10-12 would't you like to try. You can always take it back (pain in the butt as it's bulky: 4'X8'. I strap mine on roof of car and it didn't fly off :) on freeway.

Thanks, I drank too much coffee and at 400 ISO the digital camera was unforgiving :). I needed a tripod !! If you liked the tiny pictures (I had to shrink them down per AVS rules), you'd really like the real 80" wide image. I was using Athlon 1.4G PC, after market MSI Geforce2 GTS pro 64MD DDR, WinDVD 2.8, Hitachi GD-7500 DVD drive (12x)--PC was bought from www.computerbuys2000.com for <$500 and videocard for $138 for 3D games :), and 15 foot SVGA male to SVGA male cable from www.pccables.com for $13. I have a Toshiba interlaced DVD player via 50 foot S-video and it looks great too except image is slightly softer than HTPC. I chose the HTPC route as it's a little sharper and I needed a second PC for the kids anyways. I have a 17" monitor too and switch cabling when I needed to compute rather than watching movie. I like the HTPC better due to region-free and progressive playback. I have the sound via 50 foot RG-6 (black TV coaxial cable type for $10 at Walmart) with 2 RCA to coaxial converters ($3 each) into my DD/DTS receiver. SPDIF digital coaxial out is via Vortex SQ1500 ($9 by internet). Sounds great though not as good as set-top box DVD player (center channel not as loud as set top box which can be boosted with receiver). The Sony is a great projector though can have a few dead pixels (nature of LCD unfortunately). Blacks are very dark gray but not noticeable when viewed in context of surrounding imaging. Dim or no light is essential for best picture quality. Tile board really boost the brightness of this 550 lumens projector to around 800 range, I think. I actually had to turn down brightness to minimum and crank contrast to max on this type screen). If I stand up I'll get hotspotting but sitting 2 feet below projector, image is uniformly bright with much better colors. Heck this tile board is $10 at Lowes and very easy to keep clean :). Good luck with your FP purchase.

Huey,

Thanks for the info - very helpful. For now, I want to stay away from HTPC, but your links and descritption make it sound affordable. Will the Sony accept 480P from a progressive scan DVD player?

Thanks.

That's correct. It won't do 480P (EDTV) but it'll do anything else including HDTV via VGA input. It'll do interlaced component with VGA breakout cable and telling INPUT A as component instead of RGB. This way it'll allow 16:9 squeeze, color control, etc. Advantage of interlaced component and Svideo, in my opinion, is not worth the extra cost of cabling. Just get a good Svideo cable for longer lengths and it'll be great. I bought my 50 foot Svideo (to run around the room from front to back) at www.CDW.com for $27 shipped (Belkin Siver Series). It's great and visually identical to 6 foot cheapie Svideo that came with the Toshiba DVD player. If you were to do progressive, HTPC is best for this projector. Very few projector will do 480P or EDTV (NEC LT85 SVGA and LT150 XGA are some that will). Some stand alone progressive players will do other resolution than 480P but they're expensive. If you don't want to mess with HTPC, I think you'll be very, very happy with an interlaced DVD player via Svideo as the scaler/deinterlacer of the Sony is good (comparable to Infocus). My VHS and Cable TV via 50 foot, cheap composite (yes composite) are as nice as my RPTV except much bigger :) I actually squeezed the 4:3 composite image to 16:9 so I can maximize the image size with my 16:9 tile board (otherwise I have to unzoom to fit 4:3). Heck for $1700 or less you can't go wrong. Main contender I believe is the LT85 (also for $1750) as it's DLP SVGA which should be similar screendoor wise with better contrast. Just pray rainbows and color wheel noise (especially if ceiling mounted) don't bother you.

Exellent pictures!

I have an idea that you might like. I know that projector wasn't designed with ceiling-mounting in mind but there is software that can flip the image before it leaves the computer. Maybe even WinDVD can do it. This way you could mount the projector upside-down in the ceiling and get perfect geometry. I see the picture has a trapezoid-shape. I recommend you try it.

I have thought of doing this myself but I want to use a "real" DVD-player. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif Maybe if I turn my Denon DVD-2800 upside-down. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

Yeah, I read that software can "flip" your image making ceiling mounting possible. Like you I also use set-top box DVD player now and then via Svideo. I do this for the kids movies or the wife uses it for movies when I'm at work. She'll not touch HTPC ("too complicated"). I also use STB VHS and cable TV (hopefully eventually HDTV via RCA DTC-100 or Dish Network receiver). I know you can get PC video input card and use Dscaler, but again these are more steps that I don't want to mess with for "regular" watching. For serious movie watching, HTPC is the best :) I really don't mind the keystoning that much as it does not distort the picture. I could just mask it straight and hide the keystoning; but then I'll miss the 1/4 in. of image (out of 80" width) :) I think HT enthusiasts are too anal retentive sometimes, myself included :)
