Ah, back to natural color Mark, what a pleasure! Just kidding.

Nice.

Thanks. And let's not forget good 'ol 60p, but it looks like we may have to give that up for 4K.

Yeah, really not happy about giving up 60p for a year, but I do think the frame rate doubler of my display will help with that.

So you pushed me to get a couple of shots, but of course it was too late to catch the snow. I was just too busy during the storm and by the time I opened the door it had turned to rain. Oh well.

Oh that's mean Bill, very mean.

No Snow, Surprises in Lightroom

It took me two days to catch up. Maybe your snow is gone?

RV parks can be strange places. Marinas and Harbors are mysterious and dramatic. RV parks are maybe less so! But the idea is similar: escape home and live in something smaller. I climbed up on the roof with my (new) long lens and (new) tripod to see if I could find something worth a clip or two. There is not much color to record!

My short "anti snow" clip has a couple equipment, shooting and editing "surprises":

-- I am impressed with the focus on the squirrels whiskers at 300 mm, even though it is shaky. It is clear that, at 300mm, I have to use a tripod firmly set on the ground.

-- Although there is not a lot of color beyond the green palms in the desert, I liked what the GX7 did with the color that was there.

-- I used Lightroom to trim the he 1080p60 clips to a few seconds and adjust the exposure on the dog clip.

-- I used Lightroom to make the entire video! I did the very basic stuff, including a title and a music track after trimming the clips. Rendering to 1080p30 was very fast.

-- One clip is a frame grab to see how Lightroom would mix it with the video.

Unless you are doing complex transitions, a lot of grading, need rolling titles, Lightroom makes videos! The LR output is 22.6 Mbps, 1920x1080 and 29.97 fps. It appears well matched to Vimeo requirements.

OK Bill, so was the intent of this to rub it in to us poor folk caught in the snow belt?

FYI, the last storm has cleared and we're just picking up a new one. This one will only drop 3-5"...how lucky are we? We're already double our normal snowfall and headed toward 3X. Fun.

My "video experiment" is not a video that is finished in any way. Nor will it be finished. It is a short collection of a very few clips to tease a few of the snowbound who are in the middle of a multi-billion dollar USA problem.

While I was working on the tease, I tried out Lightroom as an NLE, as well as my very long lens. I've never heard of anyone using LR as a NLE to make videos. I also had to make it VERY short. My shared RV park public internet connection is fast enough to type for a few hours in the early morning, but uploading video is close to impossible.

I know the composition and quality of the video is crappy. If anyone looks at it in the next few days because they are curious about Lightroom video production, that's fine. But, it will soon go to the trash bin because it is crappy. FWIW, the clips started at 3-5 seconds, but Lightroom used parts of each clip for the automatic transitions with the effect of shorter clips.

thedest, why don't you start a thread with a title like "Completed Videos You Want to Share". I have two or three I've put up here before, but would put them on such a thread. However, I doubt a thread like that would work well here. This is an equipment forum. Vimeo and YouTube have channels, key words and groups for sharing finished videos that will work far better for video sharing.

Exactly. But, while I was at it, I tested Lightroom as an NLE and was more than surprised.

I dont think that this thread will work if I start it.

And yes, this is a forum about equipment, but everyone that shoots video wants to share them and hear opinions. I dont like to discuss those things on youtube and vimeo. A forum would be better. And sometimes we need to stop talking about tech specs and start showing what we can do. There is a time to talk about science, but the final video also needs art to look good.

One year ago I knew nothing about video, and I learned a lot sharing my videos on other forums and reading things like "that composition would look better that way. reduce the saturation in that spot. the exposure is wrong in that place. try to pan the camera that way to add some drama."etc

I really enjoy seeing the videos posted here. I fight with Ken all the time about codecs etc, but he does nice videos with the RX10, and I enjoy seeing them.

You are lucky! I wish it would snow here in Vancouver, but all we get is rain.

I've started several threads here that bombed. First was about the RX100, when it was new. The thread bombed based on a German's view that it had crappy optics. A year and a half later it is selling well as a top pocket size camera and camcorder or "tiny hybrid". Second was about trying to shoot long telephoto video.

You're turn to start one! I'll put links to my stuff that I think are "complete production videos" that are more than camera tests. You put one or two of yours there. If we are the only two posters, so be it, and it will drift off the bottom of the page very quickly.
