like a VCR? The VCR remains so ingrained in the psyche that it is like an ex- wife or girlfriend that will never leave your mind. I do not believe so but since there are so many new adopters, this is a question that will come up.

The E-80 will timer record if the unit is left on.

There are certain functions like dubbing that will temporarily inactivate the standby timer. It gives a general warning. For instance if you press record a message come up stating that standby recording is on. You have to press record again to get it to start.

The added benefit is that even if you left the unit on. The Harddisk drive will go into sleep mode when it is not used hence preserving the lifespan of the hard drive.

My E100 staying in off/sleep mode during timed recordings threw me the first time it happened. I thought it malfunctioned or that I programmed it incorrectly when the Panny didn't turn on with the rotating display -- another VCR carryover. Only later did I read/notice that only the tiny record light turns on. Totally silent operation too!
