Interestingly, it seems that Replay will have to keep manufacturing boxes for a long time to come. Although, I'm sure that Sony, Phillips, and now RCA are not in exclusive agreements with Tivo. So what will happen... I don't know.

Cheers

Yea, I'm still waiting for Sharp and Fox partnerships to come about since they were mentioned a LONG time ago...

Ask my opinion on this? (oh, didn't know you asked, huh? http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/wink.gif

I think these manufacturers (Sony, Panasonic, etc) will drop TiVo and Replay like a bad habit in the coming years. They're using these companies now to do their bidding and learn from them. Then, when they figure out the PTV game themselves, they'll stop paying licencing $$$ for them and put their own PTV software in their own boxes/TV sets.

I think Replay is smart to continue to make boxes...(although I thought they said they would stop soon)...although I don't think they'll be able to beat the big guys in hardware manufacturing down the road. But, I think it's smarter than *just* being software (ala TiVo). Don't get me wrong: I think these two (and more) PTV companies will thrive in the short term...but the long term? Personally, nope, don't think so.

That makes a lot of sense... hmmm. These really are just small PCs.

I agree which is why I would not buy stock in either. I expect that in a couple years it will be almost standard on TV, cable and satellite boxes. I've only had my 3060 for a week and can't imagine being without it now. The idea is just too good not to catch on and then our humble Replay will be a fond memory UNLESS they find some killer app they can patent.
