Tivo or MCE 2005 w/ Extender?

351 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  jkaiser
I am really torn between which one of these would be the best road for me to take. I basically just want to be able to timeshift while I watch tv and have a nice program guide to use. I would exclusively use the extender if I went with MCE 2005. I was however wondering if the extenders have built in decoders to take the processing load off the main pc. My pc is not extremely new (1.7 ghz, Radeon 9800) so without decoders built into the extenders it is likely I would not be able to continue using my main pc without slowdown. Can anyone give me any advise on which option ultimately will be the best. MCE 2005 is a big investment 125 for OS, 44 for remote, then 200 something for the extender but it does have no monthly fees which is nice. Recommendations are appreciated.

My 2 cents would be go with a hdtv tivo. For many reasons.

1. You get dual hdtv tuners with hd-tivo only a single hdtv tuner with mce.

2. and most important it has been said you cannot stream hdtv content to the extenders only on the main media center pc. It says so on microsofts website.

I use media center strictly for cd and dvd playback. (ease of use for the wife). I will buy an extender so i can access my library on my back porch. I love my hd-tivo I had hopes of mce 2005 replacing it, but not going to happen.

HDTV TIVO??? I don't see where he was even asking about HDTV. And the HDTV TIVO is like $1K.

Take a look at SageTV or BeyondTV. Software is like $70 (half the price of MCE), Remote can be the one that comes with the Haupauge PVR-250 or something fancier, and some drivers (java sdk - free and MPEG decoder). Watch while recording would require a mininum of 2 capture cards.

Not to be a pain, but MCE includes a full operating system AND a media center software package, so you really can't say SageTV is "half the price." In fact, MCE is almost half the price of XP Pro with 99% of the features, plus media center functionality (or similarly it is only about $40 more than XP Home, with many more features). You can pay $370 for SageTV plus XP Pro, or you can pay $130 for MCE (less than half the price!). Also, the media center remote is $35 (including IR receiver and blaster) and you can control everything out-of-the-box; the SageTV remote plus blaster is about $80.

Sure, the extender is $250, which is not my cup of tea. I hooked-up the MCE video output to an FM modulator and distribute both audio and video through RG-6 cable throughout the house. The modulator is $40 at radio shack and now I have audio and video everywhere. Since the tuner and video cards take most of the load, the processor runs at a very low utilization. Best of all, you avoid that nasty $300 Tivo charge for the program guide. Good luck.

My half price comment was geared on the assumption that he already had a computer with an OS. If he upgraded to MCE, then yes the SageTV software would be about half the upgrade price over MCE. I left out the extender price.

The SnapStream remote is only $30 - He didn't say if he needed to transmit to external devices as well as recieve IR control. You can currently get a 2 tuner/software/remote bundle for $280. SageTV has it's own EPG server or can run with XMLTV. There is no charge for the EPG, the only requirement is that you have internet access to the PC (either full time or dial-up).
