Folr the DVD-1600, all of the DVD formats are listed as playable (DVD-R/-RW/+R/+RW) also VCD but not SVCD. Of course there may always be some bad cheaper media or authoring program bugs that may make it unplayable on many players. I tried some real cheap house-brand DVD+RW discs from CompUSA and they all have read errors even on the DVD burner drive! Using Imation or Memorex or other name-brand DVD+RW it works on everything I've tried, so try different brands to test it and then stick with one that works. The complaints by most users usually turns out to be a bad media by one manufacturer.
