I am about to (99%) purchase a infocus 5700 and my home theater guy says to get a focus center stage scaler (CS-2). i can afford it but it's 60% of the cost of the 5700. and the combo is within 1K of the 7205... What do you all think .... i cannot see ANY of the infocus products in my area and would love some opinions....as i am fling blind.... would the scaler help that much ? Thanks in advance

My experience with Infocus is that the built in scaling is quite excellent. I would try without it, then if you want, audition the scaler later.

Don't forget that the 5700 will downscale HD and upscale DVD & SD. The first is easy, the second a bit more difficult, but Infocus does it well - with a Faroudja chip as I recall.

I would concur. Try the projector first. Infocus generally uses excellent scaling and deinterlacing so I don't know that the addition of an outboard scaler would justify the cost. In other words, is say, a 10% improvement worth a $1700 investment? The only way you'll really know is to try the projector alone first.

My guess is that you'll be pleasantly suprised.

I agree, get your projector setup first. But, if you want to experiment with scaling/post processing connect up your PC to the projector and use some cheap (or free) software to look at the effects of various scaling and post processing algorithms. It's great fun to play around with and very educational, even if you don't have the greatest PC for home theater. Here is a good primer to get you started.

Thanks guys..... i think i am going to see what i think with just the projector ... my guy says i can check it out for a half an hour and still send it back if i don't like it .. just wish i could see one. i would hate to buy this 5700 and have motion problems in a game like rallysport challenge. i have hear the motion will not pose any problems on the 5700 (blur, dithering, pixilization), but until i see it i am crossing my fingers...

I'm not sure about the 5700, but the 7200/7205 use Faroudja scaling/deinlerlacing, and I see no problems playing my Xbox on the 7200. I doubt the CS2 has any improvements to offer over the built in scaler in the 7200/7205.

There is no doubt that a 7205 will give you a superior image compared to SP5700 plus scaler. Between those two options there is really no decision to make.

Your HT guy is trying to make money. He'll sell you the Brooklyn Bridge, used, in Arizona for cheap if he felt he could convince you that you needed it. Can't fault the guy, as its the nature of sales. BTW, do you need a kitchen sink?

I see sales folk pushing scalers as a holdover from the days of analog displays - when scaling/deinterlacing could make a huge difference. In these days of digital display devices, it is simply part of the normal processing.

JasG, there are very few digital products that I would consider offering the best in scaling and deinterlacing internally.

Ferret - I agree, I was trying to point out that analog pjs had to rely on external or add-in scaling/deinterlacing.

Digital pjs by their very nature MUST include scaling & deinterlacing to function at all. Whether they include the 'best' or not is subject - and subjective? ;) to many threads here.
