Too much power?

318 Views 3 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  dsmith901
Have you ever heard of instances where there was an amp with too much power? I have a very olarge stereo amd that I wanted to drive a set of 5 1/4" bookshelf speakers but am worried about it being too much. I always thought that the more power the better. But I am sure there is aline that is drawn somewhere.

There is a line to be drawn, but suffice it to say that most of the time a large amp is better than a small amp. There are limits to how much power a speaker can take, but unless you are deaf, you probably won't reach that volume level. There is much more danger in using too small of an amp; that danger is clipping.

A big amp only has potential to blow out a speaker. Where you set the volume is what controls that potential. I've hooked up 2.5KW/channel amps to 8" tall mini speakers for troubleshooting with no problems.
I agree with AVB, with one caveat. Really cheap speakers may not be able to handle a large transient that can occur in digital soundtracks, and which the amp may pass through at higher volumes. But that would be a good excuse to get better speakers. By cheap I mean those $15 specials you find at Walmart or Kmart. Most any respectable brand of speakers will not be a problem as long as your ears can stand it.
