The change to the new board format has allowed us to see a very intersting trend. That is, it allows use to see how many people actually look at posts, as opposed to just how many reply to it.

I find it is a sorry state of affairs. eg:

A total and Complete Reversal of Opinion -RobertWood, 19 posts 1174 views!!! Are you telling me for all those 1000 views, only 15 or so people posted? I know this is the extreme, and there are alot of duplicate views, and people just checing up..but seriously, this is ridiculous.

I know we are all busy, and dont' always have the time to post a message. But I for one would like a little more activity, a little more opinion given, then just seeing a post and dismissing it without even responding.

Anyone else agree?

David,

I have mixed feelings about this.

For starters, there are a lot of people lurking the forums who are not even members. There are other members who don't post very often. It would be nice if these folks would post if they felt they had something to contribute. But quite honestly I have looked at a lot of threads and passed because I felt I had nothing meaningful to add. And in this case I would prefer to remain silent rather than rehash something already mentioned.

Also, some threads get more views than posts because the subject under discussion is not entirely clear from the title. "A total and complete reversal of opinion" could be a reference to a great many things. It is not until you look inside that one learns the true nature of the disucssion.

On the other hand I think the forum is very strong in the area of helping others. Usually when someone has a problem there is never a shortage of assistance. The high number of views on these sort of threads are usually people with the same problem looking for an answer.

Edit: In addition, the tally increments every time the page is loaded. So if the same person checks the thread 100 times then the counter will show 100 views. The numbers therefore might not be entirely representative of people who view but don't post.

My error, I forgot that their are non-members in the forum. In fact, I forgot that I myself, lurked for months before I had the courage, an knowledge, to actually start posting.

In this sense, I recind my comments, in the most part.

just to say that I had to lurk for a very long time. I was trying to become educated, er ah knowledgable. I do post some now with Q's and try to help when I think I can.

This HT hobby/passion/... has lots of area with plenty of sniggly little details and about the time I think I'll take a whack at spewing forth a garbled bit of my tiny knowledge somebody will post and sure enough I realize I'm still stupid.

Not writers block, but poster block? Heck, probably just stage fright.

The boards do seem to have a bit of a waxing and waning to them though as far as activity. Seems like 3 or 4 months back was quite active then the bottom dropped off. A lot of those who posted then sorta vanished. Of course it always tends to heat up a bit when new stuff comes is pending.

I think some of the "old timers" are waiting on some of us less experienced ones to learn how to search the archives and pose some really "new" or thought provoking questions. Jeez, how many times can you explain halo/banding/posterizing/contrast/ambient/UHP spectral shift/.....

Ah, oops, now you know why I don't post too often.

But I agree, the boards don't work if you don't

Typically, I'm not smart enough to post. The information and knowledge on the board is daunting. And although I'm not afraid of getting flamed, I think in this crowd, looking stupid is worse of a fate. :D

Pter,

I don't know if I would be too concerned about that. Don't underestimate the contributions you can make here. The questions you might ask and the answers you receive can be of tremendous help to others.

Remember, the road to enlightenment begins with a question.

This thread is kind of contradictory. Many of us tell newbies to doa little research before asking some of the more basic questions and then we complain that too many people are "viewing". I think it is an indication of the many people that are learning about our hobbie. :)

I'm not smart enough to post either, pter. But I go ahead and do it anyway. Heck, it's fun.

"This thread is kind of contradictory."

It isn't for all of us.

To be honest, I am neither a newbie, or a long time member, but when someone posts a question, I DO try to answer before I tell them to search. I answer basically, then say if you need more, go check out the archives.

Do not feel afraid to say things. If you are wrong, you will be told so, and no one will remember next week. So don't worry. I have said several stupid things, and have even go into a ranting and raving match with someone in comparing the select HT projectors to a ferarri, and how firmware is the devil!

:) It all good, and take Robert's advice, cuz he isn't lieing :)

Just shows how many non members and lurkers AVS has. I joined in March 1999 but I was lurking for about a year before I joined anddid not post for a long time.

I am surprised by how many manufacturers read AVS yet many are just lurking. Its the cutting edge stuff here that keeps everyone interested.

I guess its also a bit hard when so many smart people post here as well because when you ask a dumb question or make a wrong statement or answer you can rest assured someone will correct you.

It is interesting seeing these figures though.

I know I have often felt timid about posting because I did not have the technical expertise on certain subjects which come up on this forum. I guess I concur with Mark Twain: It is better to be silent and thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt :D .

But...what the heck! Despite my timidity, I have learned to post anyway, finding that the vast majority of forum members are friendly, helpful, and understanding. This is a great place to interact with others who share the HT passion.

Happy home theater-ing!

I will try to post more often from now on!! :)

And if someone is asking a question for help, I'll just make up some stuff just for the sake of posting!!!

Of course I'm kidding!!!! :)

Well, I'm definitely an advocate for quality over quantity, so I for one wouldn't post simply for the sake of posting.

I also lurk mostly and read the discussions. Like many others, I think, I come to AVSForum to get more in-depth knowledge of projectors, and don't really have all that much knowledge to contribute.

But if I do see a topic where I have info that might be worthwhile, I add it.

I will now return myself to my scheduled lurking. ;)

I personally don't add unless I can increase the knowledge base to some degree. I will often refer to a given thread just to see what others have said (over and over again). I have seen some threads with what seems like endless responses, most of which are no longer anywhere near the original topic. I don't see any problem with folks sitting on the sidelines and either learning or staying out of the byplay for other reasons. I will say also that many of the very very active members from six months back seem to have dropped off the map in many instances.
