High I'm planning a new theater for the basement. The room is 8' wide by 20' long. Is this too narrow or will it do?

I'd like to put in a 60"x80" screen for front projection as well.

Thanks,

Greg

Question: Where will you be placing your front speakers?

With a screen that large, you will only have 8 inches on each side for the speakers. Having lurked over at the speaker forum for a while, I believe they would advise against cramming speakers that close to the side walls because of the effects on the acoustics and reflection.

If I'm reading into this correctly, you might want to reduce your screen size a little bit....though I understand the pain of doing so.

FYI....I am in a similar boat, but I have 10' to work with.

The screen is acoustically transparent... so the speakers will actually sit behind the screen. There will be a small space behind a false wall that the screen will hang on and in that space will go the center, left and right speakers and possibly the sub.

Given that, your screen size should be fine. However, if you want to get opinions on the acoustics, you might want to post this question over in the speaker forum, along with your speaker type. They are very knowledgeable about acoustics over in that forum and might be able to give you advice about possible wall treatments and speaker placement.

Good Luck

I have a simular sized theater that I am working on in my house.

My Dimensions are 9'wide (for the first 5 ft. then 11 wide after) and 17' long w/9' ceilings. (edited)

So far so good, some of the things that can help ....I have M&K 150s (angled version for L&R) which are sealed and are limited to 80hz in freq. depth, both front side walls have (by the speakers) that GOM covered acoustic fiberglass (Acoustic Solutions brand) to absorb first reflections and then some, I am ordering bass traps for both rear corners of the room to cover from ceiling to floor.

I think for smaller rooms more absorbtion is needed than a larger room but I am no expert, I am close to posting pictures for more advice from the experts on this board. It doesent sound that bad, but I have not enlisted help yet to see what it can do....may be that it is terrible and I do not know it.

I can tell you right now you will have problems with severe light reflection off of the adjacent walls near the screen wall. Also, 80" screen width leaves little space for speakers unless you are floor/ceiling mounting them.

I am using an 8060 screen in a room that is 12'Wx14'L and the darkest blue-purple (indigo) flat paint still reflects light from the screen. Maybe this would not bother you, but I could not imagine losing 2' off of each side of the screen.

TheFerret -- In your 12X14 room, how is your seating laid out? I'm looking at a house with a "study" that we're looking at making a screening room. The dimensions are 10x15, with the northwest corner cut at a 45 degree angle for a pair of french doors, so I'm trying to maximize seating. I've put some thoughts in Visio, but haven't found the perfect solution yet. How did you lay it out?
