Top 6 reasons why the PS3 WILL be backwards compatible with Logitech's DFP

Here are my 6 reasons why I feel the PS3 will launch with backward compatibility for the Driving Force Pro:

1)The wheel was introduced with the launch of the Gran Turismo franchise. Many people who bought GT4 also bought the DFP and will definitely buy GT5. Sony knows that it is important to bring those customers back, so they will allow us to use our DFP on all PS3 racing games.

2)Logitech's new version of the DFP designed specifically for the PS3 will no doubt need to look and feel better for the next generation of PS3 racing games so it is unlikely they will have it ready at launch. Developing a new FF wheel takes time. Therefore Sony will tell the devs of all PS3 racing games to make sure their games are compatible with the DFP so that we'll have at least one wheel to use for the time being.

3)The DFP is still somewhat of a new product that was released late into the PS2's cycle. Logitech and Sony know better than to cut off support for this wheel seeing as it still has good potential to continue to make them money.

4)PS3 has USB ports...makes physically modifying the cable end or contoller port completely unecessary and makes it only a software driver issue. It's all up to the devs to supply support.

5)PS3 is expected to be 100% backwards compatible with all PS2 games. That means GT4 can and will continue to be played by fans who are busy waiting until GT Vision comes out. Fans will definitely want to continue to use their DFPs with GT4 and Sony knows this. Therefore it behooves them to make the system read and recognize the DFP hardware. Fans are expecting this.

6)Last but not least, top CEOs and managers at both Sony and Logitech read the boards here at AVS. They have been following my posts and have a fairly good grasp on my profile. They know....they KNOW that if the PS3 comes out with Ridge Racer 6 as a launch title and it doesn't work with the Driving Force Pro, Isamu will raise some serious hell at both of their headquaters! They know my lunacy knows no bounds

This is ironic, because I was thinking about putting off buying the DFP since I assumed that it might not be compatible with the PS3 or there might be a new PS3 version available. I'll be watching this thread...

So there ya have it gentlemen. PS3 WILL WORK WITH THE DRIVING FORCE PRO! Sony is NOT Micro$oft(read stupid), and they know what time it is!

I thought these kinds of posts weren't welcome here. You know, the fanb**y posts?
Tread carefully guys...

Thanks Kyserose, I apologize I went overboard and crossed the line. I honestly don't have anything against MS but I am hoping they realize quite a few gamers would like to use FF wheels with their games. I applaud them for allowing a developer like Namco to make a Ridge Racer game. I will probably still buy the game for the 360 but not until the wheel from Mad Catz becomes available.

I really hope I'm not wrong about the DFP and Sony. It's too early to tell but we'll see what happends

huh, I guess I'm out of the loop...
Surely there will be a wireless version for the PS3.
I also have a DFP and would love to use it on the ps3, but I don't plan on it. All of the reasons that the OP gave were fine enough, I would only add to them that ps1 controllers worked with ps2.

However there is one BIG problem. The DFP uses standard force feedback tech. from a company called Immersion who invented and who owns the rights to force feedback tech. Logitech has licenced the tech from Immersion to make their wheel legal but with the PS2 Sony did not. They have been sued for basically ripping off the tech. This past spring a judge awarded Immersion around $90,000,000 and ordered Sony to stop selling PS2 consoles. Another judge put a hold on that judgment but the ruling is still valid. Sony does not have any rights to force feedback. This does not make it seem likely that the ps3 will have it.

One more big problem is that as a result of a settlement in a simular Immersion lawsuite against Microsoft for using Immersion's "rumble feedback" tech without permission, Microsoft paid a ton money to Immersion and are now part owners of the company.

If that's true then why has M$ NOT allowed Logitech to bring out an FF wheel for the 360?

edit: oops I meant not allowed them to...

Do you mean "why hasn't "? I don't know of a Logitech FF wheel for the 360. Immersion is in the bussiness though of licencing thier tech to all sorts compananies. If you buy any pc force feedback wheel, it is using tech from immersion.

I do not know how much control MS has of decisions within Immersion. I'm sure that they don't have a majority share. If Sony really wanted to licence Force Feedback from Immersion they probably could, it's just a matter of how much would it cost? This time around they would have to actually pay for it after they pay out the $90,000,000 that they already owe them (or a least a big chunk of that in a settlement). That's all a lot of money.

It would be a shame to lose FF (and rumble) after having it in the PS2 but it is a real possibility. My GUESS is that if they do anything, Sony will invent their own way of doing rumble and force feedback. Nintendo invented their own rumble and they don't licence anything. Of course that would mean buying all new wheels and controllers, which is something that makes console makers a lot of money.

But what about Ridge Racer 7?

What do you mean you were right? I see you posted this pre-PS3 launch so I might wrong here.

I have a DFP and a PS3. I have tried playing GT3 and so far I cant get it to work. I dont have GT4 yet (its in the mail) but from what I have heard/read the DFP does not work in it either. I've heard that the DFP doesnt work with PS2 games on the PS3.

That being said, have you figured out a way to make it work, or have you heard of a way?

I seem to recall IGN playing some game using DFP, I'll test it when I get home, but the it is beyond me why it doesn't the logitech usb headset works, so why wouldn't this.

grrrr
Well wouldn't it? I have the Logitech G25 wheel and it works fine with the PS3.
Do you get force feedback or rumble (motorstorm,rr7,F1,NFS Carbon)? I think I might have asked this in another thread, but no one seemed to know for sure.

As Far as I know its just rumble. I think the first game that will fully utilize a good driving wheel ( DFP, G25 ) will be Formula 1.

Ok but is that PS3 games or PS2 games? Like I said so far from what I've heard they dont work on the PS3 when you are playing PS2 games, and my DFP does not work with GT3 in the PS3.
Is it confirmed that it doesn't work yet?

I managed to find a 60gb at GameStop today. I won't get it hooked up till later tomorrow, but I DO have the DFP and GT4. I'll definitely give it a try as soon as I get a chance.
I tried my Thrustmaster Enzo Ferrari wheel in F1. It works fine for the menus but then stops working once you're on the starting grid.
