I am a hd hometheatre newb and have been researching this stuff to death the last few days cause the wife wants a big tv. Now she wants to just buy one and is getting tired of me researching everything to the nth degree.


I have narrowed it down to the Toshiba 62hm196 because of the recent great prices. Or the Toshiba 56hm66 or Samsung 5686. The pricing looks to be comparable between the two 56 models both being 720p. The 62hm196 is about $400-$500 more and is 1080p.


We look to be sitting about 11-13 feet away. I feel like the big 62 Toshiba is a great deal but am not sure if the bigger size and 1080p is worth the extra $$ when I could put that money towards the surround sound.


Thoughts and opinions?

Go with the 1080P Toshiba. Great picture, better contrast and at your viewing distance you need all the size you can get.

I've read that it's not really 1080P, in that it doesn't accept 1080P input signals over HDMI or component cable.

Go for the Toshiba 62HM196, you won't regret it. I have one and it blows away the two Samsung 720p units I had previously. At the viewing distances you will be at a 62" 1920x1080p display will look fantastic.


Oh, and ignore the "it's not really 1080p" dumb asses. It is a 1920x1080p DLP display just like any other. It does not support 1080p input signals, but the fact is there is very little 1080p content available. Broadcast, cable and satellite HD signals are either 1920x1080i or 1280x720p, and there are no plans in the television industry to ever send 1080p signals due to bandwidth restrictions.


As far as film based sources (movies and filmed TV programs) go, there is no visible difference between 1920x1080i and 1920x1080p. There is exactly the same amount of detail per frame either way.


The Toshiba does a really great job of properly deinterlacing 1080i and displaying it in 1080p. Buy it and enjoy.

BUY the Toshiba 62HM196! I just recently became the owner of one as of Friday.... let me tell you, It's an Amazing TV. !

62" is a great size, you'll love it !
