Toshiba 65NH84 vs. Mitsubishi WS65313

1191 Views 7 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  gonzalc3
Well, I thought I had my RPTV decision settled on the Toshiba 65H84, but I saw a sale flyer today with these 2 tvs on sale for about 300-400 less than the 65H84. I know the Mits is an older model, now discontinued but I can't find much info on the Toshiba NH84 model. Any experience with either of these sets? If the Toshiba is essentially the same thing as the "standard" H84 sets, I'll gladly save the $400 (almost halfway to an HDTivo!) and pick the NH84 up. I haven't seen the Mitsubishi in person, but I have seen a lot of the H84 and liked what I saw. Is there any reason to go with the Mitsubishi over the Toshiba?

I have the 65NH84. I had the same choice as you and decided on the Toshiba. My understanding is that the 65NH84 is a slight upgrade of the 65H84. This is mostly due to a better remote. Toshiba also mentioned something about a different (better) glare screen for the 65NH84, but I wonder if that is true. I didn't really care... I just wanted to make sure the 65NH84 wasn't worse than the 65H84! :) By the way, I really didn't like the 65H14. The front was all a crappy silver kind of color, instead of black with silver accents like the 65NH84/65H84.

I paid $1700 for the 65NH84 at Conn's on sale. The regular price was $1800. One of my favorite magazines is Home Theater, and they ranked the Toshiba above the Mitsubishi in the Feb. 2004 issue (RPTV face off). I'm not allowed to post a URL, but add this to the main site address:

Slightly different models, but I feel good about the decision to buy the Toshiba. But part of the reason for me buying a CRT projection model was to spend as little as possible now, to save money for a digital set one those technologies improve.

Thanks for the reply. I think I am going to go with the Toshiba. I was going to ask another question, but I just saw your reply in the Tosh. Owners thread. Thanks!

The two top brands at the moment for CRT RPTV's are the Hitachi and the

Mitsubishi. The problem with the Toshiba's is the white line problem, and in the 65 H84 you cannot remove the protective shield, which is very anoying

because it creates reflection. In the same price range as the 65H84 you

will find the Mitsubishi 65315, which is the lower end of the Mitsubishi's.

My opinions...

The review I referenced had the Toshiba ranked above the Hitachi and Mitsubishi, even though it costs less. I would debate if 25%+ more is "in the same price range".

The white line problem is slightly annoying, but not that big of a deal. It sounds like there is an unsupported fix for it, but I don't plan on making one until it is supported by Toshiba. And if it never is, I'm ok with that so far.

You can remove the shield. I does not just pop off, but isn't too difficult to remove or "restack" behind the other screens. But I've instead had my room set up to reduce reflections, which is always better anyway.

Also I think the Toshiba exterior looks much better than the Mitsu, which is ugly.

One of the top notch ISF calibrators, Chuck Williams, mentioned to me

to stay away from the Toshiba's and for the 65H84 there is no way

to get rid of the protective screen. Now about the review, who did that?

About the price, Costco has the 65H84 for $1899 including S/h, and Tweeter's has the 65315 for $1999, so what 25 %?

With respect to exterior, both to me don't look that different.

Hi gonzalc3,

I never saw the 65315 that low when I was shopping, but I did get my 65NH84 for $1700, so the 65315 would stll be 17.5% more. :)

Home Theater magazine is a reliable source to me. They actually sat the TVs side by side and evaluated them (including ISF calibration). So I would hold it in fairly high regard. I doubt Chuck did as extensive of a comparison test as Home Theater magazine. This was in the Feb. 2004 issue (the review is online).

The protective screen can absolutely be removed on the Toshiba 65". It just isn't a typical customer pop-off type. But it can and has been done without too much trouble. I'd post a URL but I haven't posted enough to be able to. I'm getting there though thanks to this thread. :)

But, I do think they are both nice sets. For me the savings was important, since I consider this a somewhat temporary purchase. I wanted to save as much as possible in case I want to buy a 1080p micro display in the future.

Hi Iseven,

I read the article. The Home Theater Magazine is comparing the Mitsubishi

65613, the Toshiba 65H93 and the Hitachi 57 X500. the comparison

betwen the Toshiba and Hitachi seems to be fair, because both of them

are the high end RPTVs for those brands. They should of compare it with

the Mitsubishi Diamond 65813. By looking at the grey tracking on the Mits there, seems to be weird to me. I have seen the charts after calibration of

other Mits, and one of it strenghts is that they are able to track grey the closest to the 6500K reference.

But in anycase the important thing is to enjoy what you buy.
