Toshiba HD-D3 and scratched HD DVD's

1680 Views 8 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  blackbody
I bought the Toshiba HD-D3 about 3 weeks ago and I have started to notice it is really sensitive to scratched HD DVD. I know that these discs store a lot of info. I recently bought a used hd dvd from some guy on ebay who claimed it was in mint. When I received the disc, it had very light scratches on the reading side of the disk.

The movie was Breach btw. The question I have is this, are these players supposed to be really sensitive to the slightest scratch? Or is it the player I own?

The are really sensitive to smudges, fingerprints and film but ok with scratches. I would suggest cleaning the discs thourghly and giving it another try.

I previously had alot of problems with freeze ups all of which were resolved by spraying a disc cleaner on the disc and simply wiping it off before using (including new discs). I own around 150 discs now and no problems at all with discs I clean.

So I have cleaned off the disc with a microfiber cloth and no luck. It appears to have very small scratches.

I wonder if the D3 is sensitive to minor scratches. The guy who sold it claims that it plays well on this machine. I think he might be BS'ing because he falsified his claim of it being in mint condition.

I am coming close to my 30 day return policy coming to an end at Costco and I was wondering if I should just exchange it for a better model.
Have you updated the unit to the latest firmware? Some report that will fix the problem.
I have downloaded the latest. Is normal for the reading to say 1.3/1.1. That is normal right?
There are many reports of the 3 series having poor time reading disc's, my A2 prob reads dirty/scratched discs better than any PC drive i ever owned.....possibly as good as my Plextor burner.
I use turtle wax to buff scratched dvds , it works great!

I primarily rent my discs from netflix, so the scratches and smudges are norm. At first I watched HD-DVD only as I own XA1. I had many problems with HD-DVD. Of course the fact that all 1st gen HD-DVD players are such crap did not help the matter. Last year, after I got PS3, I realized that blu-ray had no problem with scratches/smudges. Now I rent only the blu-ray discs. When-ever I have to rent HD-DVD, I cringe since I know from past experience that any scratches may cause disc to not play or skip/stop during play and XA1 takes several minutes to boot and start playing disc.
