I'm trying to find a low-mid grade upconverting DVD player. The Tosh is readily available in my area but I'm having trouble finding in depth info about it. I saw a thread dedicated to the Toshiba SD-V592. But I don't know if the same info would apply to the 5790. Is there a thread out there that has info on this player?

I know it's not the best, but I'm looking for something that is a good bang for the buck DVD player. I can get the Tosh 5970 for half the price of the Sony DVP-NS975V.

Any advice or links would be appreciated.

Mike,

It would appear (from little I've seen) that no one on this forum likes this particular unit. I have not been able to find an editorial review of the unit anywhere.

Hmmm interesting review. It did seem very devided. The videophiles seemed to hate it, while the average guy seemed to like it.

I've read that. I'm wary because my old DVD player was a Panny and I was not too thrilled with it. Granted it was like 6 or 7 years old(back when DIVX the DVD rental thing was hot) and I'm sure they've come along way since then. But how does Panny's S97 stack up to Sony's NS975V? I've always had good experiences with Sony's.

The deinterlacer is better on the Panny, plus the Sony has had major loading/drawer problems. For high res audio, the Sony only plays SACD and the Panny only DVD-A (and the Tosh plays neither).

It can produce a fine image. The oppo I had went back. Much easier to get a perfect picture the Tosh, absolutley perfect blacks and no EE. It does flip back to 480p when powered down. Plus anyone with a 1024X768 display, it has a 1024X768 res also and no pixel croping. Anyway next up is the Tosh VHS/DVD combo with the Meditek and Geneisis chips but I hope my displays don't show macro too easy.

Good luck in your choices.
