thanks, Doug

It's buried in the RD-XS32 replacement burner thread, as well as answers to what aftermarket burners work with which model.

Not surprisingly, another RD-XS35 burner bites the dust! That model has single-handedly given Toshiba RD-XS units a bad rap for burners. Unfortunately, the burner in the RD-XS35 is proprietary and cannot be replaced with an aftermarket burner (the RD-XS55 uses the same burner).

The same holds true for the RD-XS52 and RD-KX50, although both use a different proprietary burner than the RD-XS35.

You can replace the burners yourself on the RD-XS32/34/54, but there is often some loss of functionality.

I think the XS32's burner (which could barely produce a compliant DVD in terms of PI/PO errors even when brand new-- and I had 2 units to test) which tends to blow up fairly reliably as well set up the XS' reputation for having crappy burners long before the 35 was a glimmer in Toshiba's eye.

It's really too bad they made the most feature rich models on the market but crippled them with absolutely terrible DVD burners.

As much as I'm astounded to hear myself saying this about a consumer electronics product, that isn't a bad price at all when just the part can't be found unless you pay considerably more.

Mine's been going fine since I got it fixed in 2007. Grudgingly, that's not bad to have a functional RD-XS35, arguably what some consider one of the best DVD recorders ever made or that will ever be made for the North American market.
