Not sure if this has been posted already, but it's more great news for laptop and even HTPC owners. Found this on HiDef.com :

"Toshiba has been reading my mind as they are releasing a SFF (Small Form Factor) USB Mobile HD-DVD Drive for laptops. As I mentioned in my last post, I recently acquired a new laptop via work. I made sure the laptop was Vista and HD-DVD ready (only needing a HD-DVD Drive). The Averatec laptop is AMD 1.6 GHZ Dual Core, 17" screen, 1GB Memory (upgradeable to 2GB), Nvidia 6100 Go Graphics and more (all for 1099.00). The 17" screen is awesome for gaming and movie watching. I look forward to using Toshiba's new HD-DVD Drive upon release. Word I was hearing on price is 199.00 to 249.99. As usual, nothing is written in stone."

An AMD X2 3800+ CPU, an nVidia 6800Ultra or 7600GT, 512MB RAM. I have an E6600 with an ATI X1950Pro and even without hardware acceleration of the video I only get about 30-40% CPU usage while playing VC-1 titles with PowerDVD Ultra. Intervideo will release their HD DVD playback upgrade for WinDVD8 "early this year".
Are you sure you need at least a 6800Ultra and a X2 3800+ CPU to play back HD DVD? That's some heavy duty hardware, and would seem to me to be more powerful than an A1 or A2.
A1/A2 have dedicated decoder chips

I could be wrong, Cyblerlink recommends a 6600GT minimum, no mention of the 6800 (even though it is supposedly faster).

I'm not sure if there is a 6800 series card that is HDCP compliant(or atleast at the time that was written), so that could be why its not mentioned.

It is indeed a faster, more powerful series of cards.

I would recommend going with a 7-series card such as the 7600GT at a minimum.

You don't need an HDCP compliant card since you can use VGA or component. You only need HDCP if you want to connect via DVI or HDMI. If I remember correctly the 6800 originally had an issue with WMV-HD hardware acceleration when it first came out.

Hmm... wasn't aware of that. Makes more sense than the HDCP comment I made.
Playback works ok (not quite as good as my 1900XT but good enough). I am watching Kong right now using the 360 HD-DVD Drive..

So, I am wondering if my laptop would do this...
  • A64 4000+
  • ATI X600 PCIX 128MB
  • 1G DDR 2700
  • HDDVD Drive ( USB Toshiba, or XBox HDAO )

I haven't bought the drive yet, I was planing on getting the HDAO for my HTPC, but thought this would be fun to add to my laptop, if I could.

Unfortunately, I can only upgrade my memory 512, by taking out one of my 512 sticks and putting in a 1G stick, for a total of 1.5G. Vista runs good on it, with a Performance Rating of a 2.0 ( Video card IIRC )

Any idea if this will work?

You need at least a 256MB ATI X1600

Graphics Card

* nVidia: GeForce 6600 GT, GeForce 7600 GT, GeForce 7800 GTX 512, GeForce 7900 GX2, GeForce 7900 GTX, GeForce 7950 GX2

* ATI: X1600 series, X1800 series, X1900 series

* Video RAM: Graphics card memory requires 256 MB or above
