Whats the difference between a HD Tuner and HD receiver? I have a X1 and I wanted to buy the LG 3510 DVD/HD tuner. I have read (or at least I think I have read) that you can hook up this DVD player so it will up convert DVD movies to 720 and 1080 using a component cables. Is this true? And also if I wanted to watch Over the Air HD channels what else would I need besides the tuner.

Thank you in advance for answering my dumb questions.

Tuner and receiver are different expressions for the same thing.

Yes, it appears that the LST-3510A will upconvert DVDs to HD formats, but in my opinion there's no advantage to doing so. Upconversion doesn't add any information. And there's a good chance that they're going to try to "simulate" higher resolution by using tricks like edge processing, which adds noise and can really make the picture look bad on a large screen.

The purists will want to know the quality of the scaler, and might prefer to stick with the scaler in their projectors.

You didn't mention the resolution of your display. DVDs might look better on your display in their native resolution without any scaling.

Bottom line, unless there's a significant price advantage, I would pick a separate HD OTA recever and DVD player.

Lastly, besides the receiver (tuner) you'll need an antenna, just like the old days. Maybe just a coat hanger. :) Depends on where you live.
