Hi All - I'm somewhat competent when it comes to home theater but I'm a total projector virgin and really know nothing about them. I tried to search for resources but came up with less then satisfactory results. There's also not the usual newbie stickies I would have expected.

I'm trying to plan out a projector system for my basement. Could someone point me in the right direction to get started? I'd like to learn about the pros and cons of front projection, how to set them up and considerations on what projector to buy as well as screen setup. Also, I'm going to be at a relatively close viewing position... possibly as close as less then 10 feet from the screen. Is this too close to make effective use of front projection?

Thanks for help.

Most people feel comfortable sitting 1.5 screen widths away from a 720p or greter projector. Some like it a little closer some like it a little further back. It's a personal preference. 10 feet is not too close as long as the screen is an appropriate size for you.

The biggest thing to know about a projector is the room has to be relatively dark without direct light on the screen.

Here is a post I wrote about what to look for in a projector.

Here are a few good review sites.

Reading a newer review on this site will give you the basics for how to evaluate a projector.

Here is a calculator that tells you how big an image a projector will throw at any given distance, although it wont tell you how high or low on the wall the image will be. Once you select the brand and model, I usually select "diagonal range" in the "zoom" box on the left.

The pro calculator whould be your main source for deciding on what projectors are even going to be an option for you where screen size and throw and placement goes.

The only problem with Projector noobs is they can suffer from Premature Projectorization......it's a messy problem....my advice...get the right thing the first time...don't just jump on a deal..

Big Mistake you came to this forum--you will leave with lots of knowledge but will be miserable.

Save yourself while you still can--buy a projector after a little research, find the tweaks thread here for your pj, and run like crazy.

Come back in 2-3 years and repeat process all over.

You have been warned, friend!

It was all fairly downhill for The Eagles after "Hotel", as it is for all AVS Memebers.
