Total Recall Studio Canal Calibration Extra Questions

1716 Views 16 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  Robert D
So I poped in Total Recall HD DVD and wanted to try out the video configuration to adjust my default settings Sharp. First it tells me to increase the brightness until I can see an X in the black area. So I start upping the brightness but can NEVER see the X. The picture gets way too bright and I set it back to the default. What did I do wrong? Is the X really there in the upper half of the screen in the black rectangle???

Help.

I don't have this title, but Try upping your contrast first.
Are you in DVI to HDMI, if you can't see the X that may because you're connection isn't showing BTB on you're display.. and YES there's a X, on my Total Recall..
I'll try that calibration screen on my copy of La Haine tomorrow and let you know what I find.

Yeah. . . I also think it may be a BTB (blacker than black) problem. It sounds similar to the "shadow" on the THX logo.
HDMI Connection.

Guess this means the video configuration is useless.

Sharp LC-45GX6U LCD.

what titles have the calibration screen??

I have HPGOF and Equilibrium but I haven't watched them yet.
With hdmi-dvi I don't see the x either. However with component, it sets up just fine. Currently that's what I'm using while I don't hold my breath for a firmware update that fixes the dvi issue. Given how good the image looks, I'd be happy to just continue with component.
The X is below black. [email protected] levels doesn't pass below black.

I think just the studio canal titles. So neither of those would have them since HP was created by Warner USA. Though I haven't checked either of those either, so they might have something equivalent.

hmm, I might have to give Total Recall a go just for the added bonus of the calibrations since Video Essentials has been postponed yet again.

It's finally back in stock at xploitedcinema.com.
My UK copy of The Pianist does also have the Calibration Extras. Maybe all Studio Canal titles do?
Yes, Studio Canal titles contain the Video / Audio Calibration feature. I own "Basic Instinct" and just ordered "Total Recall" at 9 am this morning (Pacific), my order shipped at 12:23 pm (Pacific) from Xploited Cinema! Great website, great fast service and shipping, great products!

Total Recall's video cal was very helpful. It worked perfectly on my XA2 feeding a RCA Scenium 34" CRT via component video. But alas no "X" on the XA1 feeding a Sceptre 37" LCD with component. Clipping I presume -- tried the enhanced black -- both ways -- no diff.

The audio cal was very interesting. Just that the subwoofer on two diff systems came out as 90 dB SPL via S/PDIF or 5.1 analog!
The other channels were all measuring 70 dB SPL. Did sound like a proper subwoofer test tone though -- with no high freqs -- unlike the test tone of the XA1.

Not sure what I did but the video cal now works -- I can see the X. Enhanced Black Level is off. Then can adjust the Black Level control on the LCD display to just get the X to disappear. So I'm happy now.

I have this title and I can't see the "X" using either my HD-A2 or HD-XA1 player via HDMI on my 2005 56 inch Samsung 1080p HDTV. Is my display borked or is it the players that are not showing BTB?
