Transcoder

I am in need of a transcoder that will take VGA to RGB (RCA type output). Any ideas? I am looking for something small that can be mounted or hidden behind a 50" plasma. Hoping to find one that is easy to set up, and compatible with a number of resolutions. What are some of you using, or have had good experiences with? Thanks.

I don't think that you need a transcoder since VGA is RGB. Is it a cable that you need?

Ed
I believe he really is talking YPbPr via RCA connectors as that would fit the description.
If the OP is actually wanting a component to RGB transcoder, be aware that the Audio Authority model pointed to in the link above may have some issues. I bought one of these (based solely on the fact that it was the cheapest I could find) and it had some serious color problems (I was going from a D* HD Tivo to a RPTV). When I asked technical support at Digital Connection (where I bought it) I received this:

"...Thank you for your purchase. Unfortunately, the 9A65 is rated only for 480p signals, and in fact there is a known issue with some cable boxes that Audio Authority was not able to correct for 1080i signals, hence the disclaimer about the unit being designed for DVD.

The Key Digital KD-CTCA3 is rated for 720p/1080i, and if you decide to exchange the unit, our tech support staff should be able to help you arrange an exchange..."

I did exchange mine for the KD-CTCA3 and it works like a champ. Note that both of these things require a power source, some sort of a transformer-doobie from which comes DC power through a cable to the unit.

I picked up the Altinex TR 6102HD off ebay and it works great. Got it for a great price as well. I would say look around a bit and really understand what you want it to do (resolution). You might try the CRT forum as well tends to be a lot of discussion about transcoders there.
Thanks for all of your responses.

I went ahead and purchased the KD-VTCA3.

Should arrive in a few days.
Like I tell my kids, check your work. I became a bit confused when I first started this exercise and ordered the opposite transcoder than I actually needed. LOL! I kept it, though, as the restocking fee was harsh and I figured I'd be able to find some use for it.

Just curious...

Why not this one at ~1/3 the price?

did you not read post #5 above?

also, I have the KD-VTCA3 as well and it works very well. I am having an issue with a newly purchased YPbPr to VGA of theirs, but the other way works great.

Apprarently I did not. My bad.

Thanks for the poke in the eye.
FWIW, In the past I had used an Audio Authority 9A65 coupled with a Cable box (Motorola DCT 6200) to transcode the cable box Y/Pb/Pr output to a VGA/RGBVH signal that was all my 1st generation Mitsubishi WS65903 would accept. It worked seamlessly. I just tried using the 9A65 with a Direct TV H20 and upon startup the Tv picture was distorted-jiggly if you will. The picture would seemingly adjust and clear up working from the middle of the screen upwards and downwards till the picture was correct in ~5 minutes. When I had purchased the 9A65 IN October 2004, compatibility issues weren't known/disclosed.

Today I tried an Audio Authority 1365 scaler ($249 suggested retail) and once the initial setup problem was corrected the picture now fires up immediately with no distortion.

My only problem with setup on the 1365 was that my TV's High Def input only accepts a 1080I RGB 60HZ signal. The default setting on the 1365 is a VGA 480p signal-tough to access the onscreen menu when there is no menu displayed. Worked around it by connecting the 1365 to my PC and monitor, accessing the menu and designating the correct output resolution, then disconnecting from the PC and reconnecting to the Tv.

All is well now.
