Transfering Mini-DV to my Computer

I captured several VHS home movies onto mini-dv tape using a JVC GRD-72 camcorder. I have been unable to transfer it to my computer as apparently there is an incompatibility with the camera & my mobo chipset or firewire card. Anyhow...... I'm going to try to transfer these tapes by using a friends Panny camcorder. My question is this...... will the quality of the transfer be affected by the quality of the camera? Would it be true to the original tape as long as I save it in mini-dv format regardless of which camera I use?
