Transporting a Plasma

1125 Views 19 Replies 16 Participants Last post by  lvovsky
I understand that transporting a plasma horizontall isn't the best thing for it. However, if I'm purchasing a 42" at a BB or Costco about 5 miles from my house (a smooth 5 miles that can either be highway or surface streets), and want to put it in my car (2005 Impala), think I'll be ok?

It may be fine... but laying a Plasma flat to transport may crack the glass. Also you will void any warranty by doing so. In fact BB will not load a Plasma flat into your vehicle.

CD
I wouldnt risk it ... there are warnings on everyside of the box saying not to transport it flat. You're better off going to avis and rent a pick up truck or suv (make sure its high enough) ... or find a friend with one and buy him lunch :)
You can transport a Plasma horizontally when it is laying on a perfectly flat surface. I'm not quite shure an Impala has an area where you could fit it perfectally flat (horizontal).

Borrow a pickup truck or minivan from someone. If you transport it vertically make sure you secure it and prevent it from tipping over. If the panel falls on its back, it will be toast.

I don't believe this is correct.

Doesn't Home Depot rent trucks for like $20?
Every few weeks this question is asked ?

again I ask WHY ?

Your spending $2500 - $5000 on a new plasma and you are to cheap to rent a truck or find a friend with a suitable vehicle .

Do ya think it would be safe to drive on the "donut spare" across country if I kept my speed to 55 mph and didn't hit any potholes ? YEAH LIKE THAT WOULD BE SAFE .

I have to agree with the last post. Doesn't Best Buy deliver it for $50 or $100? You will still need at least two people to carry the plasma into the house.
I bought my plasma TV yesterday from CC, and while driving home back the TV was in upright position in the back of the truck and it fell down in the back on the way home(don't remember it falls on its back or front) becuase of the bump. I was so scared to open the box. Luckily nothing happend, I plugged in the TV and it worked fine. I don't know will I see the effect right away or the damage will show up after sometime, if there is any?

So, don't take risks, these items are too expensive and delicate. Keep it upright and make sure it won't fall.
If you have a car roof rack, use that ! :D :D :D

Just kidding :)
Not every plasma transported horizontally will break, but the risk is there and so is the warning. If one chooses to ignore it, that's fine and up to the owner. Doing so "may" not break the panel glass. It will depend on other factors...the right bump, the right hit or shock, etc. You know the risk, now it's in your court to decide how much you care about the cost to deliver it properly versus saving on that delivery cost.

Transport it upright, either out of the box in the back seat w/ someone supporting it, have a friend/relative w/ a suv/van, or have it delivered. There is enough to worry about, why take an additional risk.

Does Home Depot rent out trucks w/o any purchases? Does one have to purchase something like drywall, otherwise wouldn't they basically be giving away the trucks to everyone who wants to make a small move? I always wondered about it.

Enjoy your plasmas.

Just kidding :)
Last year as i was leaving CC, i saw a big plasma box moving through the BB parking lot across the street - it was strapped, upright, to a roof rack on a small sedan !!

To the guy with the pickup truck - i can't believe someone would transport a plasma in the back of a truck without strapping it down, or drive in such a manner that it topples over, and that it would survive falling over without damage of some sort.
I did strap down the TV, but the way I tied was not proper. I would have paid the hefty price for that mistake and also not driving the truck myself. But now I have learnt from the mistake, I should warn/suggest people not to do the same mistake which I did.

So strap down your TV strongly and properly...:), handle it like a baby and drive carefully...

Enjoy
This heres one of them importent lessuns to lern from. Take it from me.

2 monthes back my truck was in the shop so I took a taxie to the TV store to buy us one of them big Piosonic plazman tvs on sale. Wen I got her outside the taxie were way to small. Lucky fer me there was a guy in the parking lot with a pickup so I aksed him ifn he would take my plazman home to me for $20. He said OK so me and him strapted her strait up real tite like and I toled him my adress and he took off real quik like. Bad part is that I aint see him since and I'm feelin pretty low cause hes probly goin crazee drivin all over this town lookin fer my place. Just hope the TV didnt brake or nuthin. So the ole ladys bin reely on my case, soI got us anuther plazman tv butt its a bunch smaller caus I still gotta pay my notes on the first one fer about the next 15 yeers Ithink.

So just be reel smartr in me about this stuff. Ifn yer ever gonna do sumthin like this then make darn sure the taxie you git is a reel biggun.

Here's how I got my 50" Panny 500U plasma home safely.

Borrowed my dads minivan, I did not try to wedge it into my suburban on it's side.

I measured the outer box of the plasma way before the actual pick up day. That's right I asked them to wheel it out and I measured it. It was to big to fit, but it would fit fine with the outer box removed.

Two of us slid the box in via the rear door. I used packing blankets to protect it on the side facing the window. The other side I used the outer box and more packing blankets to brace it in place.

I also used a bungie cord around the base of the box.

There was no way this thing could slide right ,left ,front or back.

The stand is packed in a box below the plasma itself and creates a very stable base, but without side to side support it's just asking to tip over.

This is not rocket science people, use them same ,if not anal common sense that we have all used to research our plamas before the descision to buy them.

do I need to re-enact this scene with pictures , in order for it to be perfectly clear. ? ;) ;)

Do the pannys have a "top" portion of the box that can be removed?

I'll be picking up the 42px60u this weekend, and it appears it may "just" fit in the Honda Pilot. I wouldn't think there would be an issue removing the top styrofoam piece if you needed just a bit less for it to clear, provided you could keep a hand on top.
Just go to U haul and rent . Last time I needed to move big items $20 a day for an enclosed 10 foot truck. Only put on 30 miles and the guy waived the milage fee cause I returned it early. Pretty cheap peace of mind.
The outer box is more of a "shell" it's tight around the entire lower portion and is held in place by 3 foam wedges that sit atop the plasma. So with the box removed your gaining 4-5 inches at least. I don't recall exactly the height of the foam wedges, but you will gain some top clearance for sure.

You will need to completely unbox it, and sit it upright in the back seat and have someone hold it while you drive. It won't be easy, but can be done. A friend with a truck or van would be ideal. Good luck and enjoy the new set :)
err... someone I know moved his Pioneer 4214 from Costco laying flat on its side in the back of subaru tribeca... the set was on its side for 25 min. After that, the set stood upright for about an hour before it was plugged in.. It's been about a month since then and no problems at all....

do you feel lucky, thou?...
